Sena 20s, Garmin 550 and iPhone 5 problems

Reading reviews on the net and here, a bunch of mates and I invested in sets of 20s for a trip that's coming up...
The Senas are sold saying they will do all sorts!
They ain't...
We seem to have got them talking to each other, and the Garmin can now be heard for direction prompts.

The really annoying thing is the bloody phone isn't controllable via the Garmin.
Hit the call button on the Garmin, it rings at the destination, but the nothing is heard at either end.
I can call using the phone if the Garmin is switched off... And the calls are clear as a bell and very impressive.
So why the hell am I having problems with the calls via the Garmin?

Oh and as I ride along, the Garmin keeps dropping the connection between the phone and the Garmin.... Something it never did before the Sena arrived!

My mates have the same set up as me, and they are having the same issues....

Please, has anyone worked this out before I throw the damn thing in the bin!

You haven't paired the phone with the Sena have you? The idea is to pair the phone to the Zumo and then pair the Zumo to the Sena. The phone and Sena should not be paired together. Try clearing all the pairings on the devices and redo as above. That's how ours are paired and they work perfectly.

You haven't paired the phone with the Sena have you? The idea is to pair the phone to the Zumo and then pair the Zumo to the Sena. The phone and Sena should not be paired together. Try clearing all the pairings on the devices and redo as above. That's how ours are paired and they work perfectly.

Yes, that's true. It's a bit of a design flaw. If you don't pair then you can't use the app. If you do pair them the Zumo and Sena argue over the connection to the phone and nothing works. I used the pc app to tweak the settings and tune the radio and haven't had to alter anything since.

+1 for unpairing the phone from the sena
It is even still they way to work everything even with the latest Zumo 590. I think it has something to do with the phone being confused with what it is supposed to be linking to. If it is linked to the Garmin and the BT headset at the same time it goes into meltdown.

As I only use my Garmin for trips away it is not an issue. I just factory reset my bt headset before a trip and pair phone to Garmin and Garmin to headset.

It does kind of make sense.

That all makes sense.... But music from the Garmin to the Sena is in mono...
Music from the phone is in stereo.... But you can't listen to the music from the phone as you suggest I don't pair the phone to the Sena....

You a right. Music from the 550 is mono via blue tooth. Get a 590 that's stereo

I suppose you have to decide what you want and take it from there. I never listen to music on a bike. That's what cars are for so this was never an issue.

I presume you have a Zumo 550 if you say music is mono? All the later Zumo support stereo music over Bluetooth.

If that's the case you've a choice to make: do you want music in stereo or the phone controlled by the Zumo? Do you have an iPod you could use for the music if you need the phone to work off the Zumo? There are a few different use case pictures in the manual, so it may be worth taking a look at them.

The Sena kit comes with a great Manual that has diagrams explaiinly all the pairing options for phone, navi and headset, depending on what you want to do.

I have my iPhone paired to a Nav V, and the Nav V paired to my Sena SMH10R. Everything works as it should.

I had a zumo 550 and scala G9. I found that it didn't work well when phone paired to zumo and zumo to the G9. I found it was better to pair zumo to G9 and phone to G9. This way you can hear GPS prompts play mono music from zumo. BUT its better to play music from phone (stereo). Only downside is that you cannot use the zumo to control phone. Answering calls on g9 is easy with voice (not sure about sena). Dialing from G9 has voice dial but rarely works, the G9 allows a single number to be stored which can be dialled at press of button.

You pair the garmin to the Headset as a phone. When I switch on my headset and Nav V, I get the message "Phone paired"

You pair as a phone, as detailed in case study 2 on page 50 of the manual. It's all in there telling you what to do.

Thanks Ianm00 . I have now paired this way and it seems to work the best for me as I listen to music more than I use the phone on a bike. The Sena has storage for 3 speed dials, wouldn't need more than that on a bike. Also when paired with an iphone if you press the phone button (on the rear of the unit) it activates the siri and you can voice dial from that (it seems to work ok at 70+ with a Schuberth C3). Now I can listen to stereo music, get GPS direction and the intercom. For those that were as confused as me, this is "Case 1" in the instruction manual, page 49. Thanks again.
