Roll call

So its all looking good, glad its looking like a goer

Easysushi = every thing
IJgser = basic camping
karlip = basic & satnav
Farrow = cooking

I'm thinking from this i don't need to go buy/carry loads of cooking and tools i can leave some space for supply's for the group but what about satnav n radios can we get by with some of the group without?

Looks like everybody is happy with Germany, Austria then CZ if weather and time permits i agree that following the weather is better than desperately trying to get to a destination but it was good to get a idea of peoples ideal route.

I haven't camped on the Continent so what kind of night temperates can i expect in late sept i know that days can be surprisingly warm :Motomartin but iv always been in a nice hotel in the wee hours. :hide

Also is there a ideal max group size?

Cheers for the list Ty

All for now

Ian

Sat nav's and maps are a must, I use a zumo 550 and one of those indestructable maps on my tank bag. Radio's never used them don't see the need we can just use the drop off system and had signals.

It can get quite cold at night, so a good Sleeping bag is worth its weight so to speak 3 - 4 season bag should be ok.

Don't all need radio - two would be useful (one front one back).

Don't all need sat nav as long as rules are agreed beforehand.

Six bikes is ok - done 12 but that is not easy to manage.

Satvav is only really useful on the road if we have predetermined routes. If it is being made up as we go along then it is really follow the leader or if anyone gets left behind to meet at a predetermined point.

Where it can get difficult if only one person has the tools and he ain't with the person who has the breakdown.

Hi Karl,

With out me sounding like a know it all twat, I will give you my advice on camping gear from my own experience, spend money on decent gear to begin with, it will make camping much more comfortable and you will enjoy it far more, go for lightweight compact. I can highly recommend the following:

Thermarest Prolite 4 (XL) Sleeping Mat

Thermarest Compressible Pillow

MSR DragonFly Stove

Northface Big Fat Frog Tent

Northface Superlight (Down) Sleeping bag

But do a search on here and you will have plenty of idea which is the best stuff to go for

Cheers :beerjug:

a) I'm working nights 24th - 26th and can't get it covered :blast

b) I've commited to the East Midlands do on the 18th - 20th:D

c) I value my bollox:augie

BTW I can recommend the CZ, lovely country with some excellent camp sites. It will take some Autobarns but you should be able to get there in 3 days.....:oonyack

Have a great one:beerjug: and watch out for covert midnight video ops:augie:D

Ty

Thanks for the info I was going to ask you anyway.

I have been following the threads on here about gear and it was getting a bit confusing so all advice is welcome.

I must admit when I read the stuff you have I was wondering if you were pulling a trailer

Everything fits in my panniers and top box except the chair which I sling across the pillion seat. I have got it down to a fine art now, everything listed I use. The first time I went camping all the panniers choc-a-block and I had a large roll bag full of stuff. I found I wore the same clothes the whole week except boxers and t-shirt, and didn't need the extra's. Now i just have the same set up each time

Works for me

Ty

Just to add from someone who bought some new kit earlier this year. Stuff that was beginner friendly and worked really well.

1. Exped mats rather than thermarest
2. Agree with thermarest pillow
3. Primus eta stoves .. they come in different sizes. Good thing for a beginner is that it comes with everything. The burner and pots with a lovely bag. I got the ETA pack lite.

This is the bigger one Eta power

4. You missed the best value offer at gooutdoors.co.uk for the Coleman Phad X3 :(

5. Down bags are brilliant. They pack down much much smaller.

Taking stock

Have just had a look through the past posts of 'who's where & got/wants wot' and we seem to be fairly well covered.

Are we all agreed we're aiming for Black Forrest & into Austria - weather permitting? IMO any further and we'll loose 2 days on Motorways.

IJGser - You seem to be the furthest from the Channel ports can what's the earliest ferry time you can comfortably make?

Ty - IJGser has a 'good sized pan'. Will your one of your light-weight pans cope with the rice/pasta/spuds for 4 growing lads? or do we need another larger pan?

I've now also got a small & a 3/4" drive star/torx sets, a long 3/4" bar & puncture kit (gas cannisters) to ad to the party.

With the exception of our own personal & camping stuff - can any of you guys think of anything else we need?

My pan set will cater for 4, there is not much else we will need to take. Just remember we are going to Europe not outer mongolia :). Anything we don't have we can get in camp shop along the way. We don't need to take any food or water with us we buy on a day to day basis

Hey Guys,

Might be a good idea to meet up before we depart, so with that in mind where would be the best place for everyone and when

Crossing times

Well spotted farrow i am in the midlands or as all folk south of watford gap call a northern bloke to witch i have many sarcastic answers but I'm sure you bunch of well travel gents will understand i ain't from the north. just North of you.

Regarding ferry times on the Saturday i will go with the flow i have a friend in potton nr sandy (just of A1) i could stop with on the Friday or be cheeky and grab a settee/bed from one of you if its gonna be impossibly early (cant do cats allergy :tears) I like to start early in my day to day life anyway. If all else failles ill stop in a dreaded travel lodge.

Ty thanks for bringing me back down to earth, they will all speak some English, food will be recognizable and breakdown cover is there in place. its just the camping in foreign lands thats new :clap should be fun and failing that different :nenau
R.E meet up i guess as I'm furthest you should all come to me :augie only joking if you all cum up with a mutual meeting place down your way ill come to that weekday nights is easy est for me.
