is it possible to get a serial to usb converter that works?

Bought one off ebay and cant get it to work. A friend said the are all the same?

What are you trying to connect to, do you know settings ?

Most of these seem to work OK but in some applications the only thing that will work is a real serial port on an older OS

A Thrane and Thrane Immersat C system.
Works fine on an old toughbook with a serial port but wanted to use it on a newer computer.

can you buy pcmcia cards with a serial port?

I've been using one of these:-

http://www.easysync-ltd.com/product/526/es-u-1001-r10.html

With various mac/pc hosts and storage/router/FC devices over the last few years. Works fine in windows7 native and also virtualised on a mac.

That looks to be decent quality. I tried several cheapo ones bought on ebay to connect to Cisco kit, but only one of them seemed to work. Quite a few did not have Win 7 compatible drivers either.

Yep I have got one, I also have a few USB to RS232. The advantage of the pcmcia is it has much more settings including RS485 so should be able to talk to more stuff. Downer is pcmcia is fast on it's way out so on future laptops probably not an option.

I know some of the kit we have wouldn't work with any serial port on a machine with XP or above, a lot of the problem seems to be when either the software is doing odd things with the serial port, or when devices needed the 12v dc either because the logic didn't recognise the lower voltage logic 1 from usb serial ports, or they powered themselves using serial pin voltages.

Best usb ones I have where from Maplins but the ones they have now look different.
