Help!

Have enjoyed a fantastic tour of Scotland but my 2007 1200gs has developed a problem which nearly had me meeting my maker in the form of a tour coach coming the other way. Whenever I open the throttle it is as though I have pulled in the clutch. The engine revs climb but there is NO drive. After a couple of seconds it starts to bite and the power picks up but nothing like it used to. At first it tended to happen when rolling on in 4th or 5th and then infrequently. Now it happens all the time in all gears, even when pulling away from a standstill so it is obviously getting worse.

Any ideas - I will be calling BMW assist but I'd like to know what I'm in for.

clutch lever not fouling on the handguard is it?

if not, knackered or oil contaminated clutch perhaps.

My money's on a leaking gearbox seal contaminating the clutch plate.

Symptoms are classic for a dry clutch on the way out. Starts in high gear first, slipping a little then picking up, then moves to the lower gears and becomes more frequent. Could also be contamination from an oil leak, but this would be visible and with all that slipping you would smell the burning oil. My car went after 18 months, replaced under warranty and was a design issue on the clutch unit - not worn but with the same symptoms as a worn clutch - so it can happen early. Check the handguards as well and make sure they are straight before taking to the dealer for a warranty claim. You don't want to give them any excuses.

Wot they say. Most likely the clutch from oil contamination and it'll be well shot by now.

Doh! Do I feel stupid!

Thanks guys,

despite being caught out by the handguard activating the brake lever once before, brains here didn't think to look at the clutch lever! - sure enough the handguard was fouling it!

:blast

You've saved my embarrassment at the dealers!

Also worth checking the fluid level in the clutch reservoir. As the clutch friction plate wears, the level goes up not down.

When the reservoir gets full, you get clutch slip until you drain a little out of the reservoir with a syringe.

LOL we have, almost, all done it!Problem for you now is that you posted it on here, now thousands know:blast
Had you asked yer service guy only you and he would have known:( :D

Exactly the same problem

Starting "smelling" the clutch a couple of days ago ( No not a prison euphemism ! ).

Then yesterday on the way home pulled out on the motorway, opened the throttle in 4th and the rev counter nearly hit the redline with no perceived acceleration.

Did it twice again this morning, both with the same 'smell', and then once again on the way to dealers.

Dropped it off at AJ's this afternoon to get it looked at and sorted

In the meantime have a R1200R to play with weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
