Hi chaps can you lot maybe tell me if i was right or not to be annoyed with my dealer.I was quoted £150 for 12k service there were no extras ,when i arrived i was presented with invoice for £205 after heated discussion and bein told £205 was in and around £150 the price was reduced to £170 which is a saving of £35 pounds on invoice so cant help thinking original had been inflated any ideas ,PS WAS CHARGED 3HRS LABOUR
Cheers Wes:beerjug:

well if you are happy to deal with a business that considers a variance in excess of 36% to be acceptable you just carry on using them.Just think how carefully they must perform your service with that sort of tolerance. A no-brainer.

ignorance

Thanks for your very unhelpful and ignorant answer to my query, unfortunately living in northern ireland i am restricted to only one BMW dealer and they are it Thanks again for your ignorance in your comments

Wes

There is a major difference in law between a 'quote' and an 'estimate'.

If you were given a quote of £150, whether verbally or in writing, then that is the price you should be paying - unless there has been a 'change-in-contract' i.e. somthing else has been done as a result of developments 'unforseen at the outset of the contract'.

An estimate is just that; a guess that is not legally binding.

I know the above may sound pedantic, but it is the reality of law.

Hope this helps.......

Wes, are you a little annoyed or are a very annoyed. What all did the service include? You should do a check on prices with some of the english dealers by telling them what work was done and you will then see if you were screwed or not. Hope this helps, your BIG chum, Ricky.:(

Wes,

purely from a cost point of view, I'd suggest that £205 for a 12k service was at the lower end of the scale, if that makes any difference....

Woah - hang on a sec - teddies out of the pram or what ? life is too short to get this angry about something like this IMHO.

No - this sort of difference between quote and bill is not good, but here's what I would do next time, wherever I take my bike for a service:

Ring up to book bike in - obtain quote.

When you take bike in, discuss anything over and above normal service work that might need doing - establish how much extra this will be. Look the bloke in the eye and say "So the whole lot will be £x then won't it" - get their agreement, then say to them that they must call you and obtain your specific permission to fit anything additionally to what has been discussed. I also tend to phone up halfway through the day to ask if everything is alright and what (if anything) they have found in addition to the normal service stuff.

If your bike is out of warranty I would suggest looking for an independent specialist.

My brother once took a fairly knackered VW Jetta in for a service and was told they had replaced the front brake pads and brake discs without obtaining his permission - he made them swap the parts back and refit the old stuff ! So ditto - if they've done something expensive without your permission which would not be part of the normal servicing, you have the right to do this.

Stay cool

Agree with 6X totally. If you're p***ed about something and then ask the folks on this forum for help and advice, don't spit your dummy at them if they are not completely aware of your circumstances. As a newbe GS'er I have been back to this site time and time again for advice and every time they have come up trumps.

To answer your original question, £205 doesn't sound that far off to me.

apology

May i start by apologising for my outburst i thought our fellow members no brain comment was aimed at me and not the dealer in question ,im sorry that takes a lot for the irish to apologise for anything and i do appreciate the help given at any time from all the members ,many thank again ,head bowed in shame WES

Wes,
apology accepted in the spirit in which it is offered, and equally mine are offered to you if I gave you the impression I was having a go at you. As others have noted your invoice cost is at the lower end of the scale so your sucess in getting it reduced is the more commendable as the revised price must barely have covered the labour costs let alone any consumables.

I take it the dealer in question was Charles Hurst?

Anyone else from Nor'n Iron had to deal with them? Just wondering what they're like as I was going to buy from them the other week before my insurance company shot that plan in the foot...
