Service costs

I had my 1200gs serviced this week and had its first MOT also, and was charged £171. is this about normal, I've jap bikes for years with cheaper servicing or is it just me.

I was disapointed to discover that the reason the bike kept on loosing charge was a dodgy starter motor is this a common problem? I would have thought it should go a lot longer than 4000 miles!!!! I did get it changed on warranty though

Don`t get your beef here. £171 is a decent price from a main dealer especially with an MOT. Don`t know many jap bikes which can be serviced for that price.

BMW also found the starter problem and fixed it under warranty. I would have thought that was a good result and the dealer did there job which should of made you happy.

The first MOT is at three years old and the warranty on a new bike is two years. I therefore infer that you bought the bike pre-owned (what a wonderful euphemism) from a franchised dealer. How many miles has the bike done?. £171 seems very good to me. I find the R1200GS cheaper to have serviced than the Triumph Tiger I had before. I suspect that this is mostly due to not spending an hour removing panels to get at the spark plugs and tappets, then another half an hour to put the panels back again afterwards. I've never paid to have a Japanese bike serviced so I've no idea of the cost involved but I can't see it being too different to the Triumpgh.

MOT, 12000service and rear brake pads replaced last week at Clarks Dundee. Loan bike also for the day. £257 all in. Was expecting it to be more and pleasantly surprised. Might keep it now that I've spent that much.

Thankyou all for your replies, I just didn't know what to expect, and after reading your comments and thinking about it it does seems a fair cost, considering diff oil and gear box oil replaced. (calmed down now)

Still surprised it needed a starter motor on a 3yr old bike, at 4000 miles thats bairly run in for a bmw. (this would be worthwhile check for guys having battery problems, seemingly too much current pull)

I was £210 for a 6k + annual inspection service at JC in Aberdeen.

Didnt think that was too steep - I have heard of KTM owners getting charged £250 for a run in (600 mile) service

06 GSA, 19,000miles, serviced the easy bits myself, engine oil & filter, gearbox oil, air filter, final drive oil, plugs and brake pads, around £100 for parts and oils and then my time.

Had the brake fluids changed, valve clearances adjusted and the throttles balanced + MOT for just £133 well happy, especially after being invited to stay and watch, what a bloody job to change the brake fluid.

£265 or there about for the first year 6000 mile service, this included the a collection and delivery charge. Expensive this dealer servicing lark.
