When I start my f800GS, the service date (8 months in the future) appears briefly before being replaced by the odometer reading.

I had the battery out a month or so ago to recharge it (the bike had been left standing for 6 weeks or so and the battery was well discharged) -- could this be the reason? (My Optimate charger indicated that the battery was fine after charging.) Or is this indicating that my battery is dying?

Its supposed to come on to advise you to start saving up your money and preparing you for the service bill!!!!!

After I fitted a new battery in June last year mine switched the service reminder back on as it was still about 100 miles to being due, according to the computer. It had actually had that service a couple of hundred miles previously.
So when it packed up one night and went into Cannon's to get fixed I asked them to switch it off...but...instead of turning it off, liked I'd asked, they set it for the annual service reminder. Now I didn't mind that it came up with a 'Service 05 2016' (just how much notice do they think we need?) each time I turned the ignition on, but the fact that it then had 'Service' up on the info screen the whole time was really, really annoying.
So I asked the guys at Cooper Tunbridge Wells and one of their nice techs changed the date on the system to something like 2099. Like magic the whole thing has vanished.
In what is now over 41 years riding none of the bikes I have ever owned has ever had an annual service, I do far to many miles in a year for that malarkey.
