I hear the 08 on bikes have a lamp that tells you when the bike needs servicing and that they read the memory to see what needs changing? Does this seem to work out cheaper or more expensive than just having set service intervals with set things changed at set times? I will be changing my bike after Christmas but don't want to pay even more for servicing:eek:

I would be interested to hear coments from people running these newer bikes. I use mine for pleasure so don't have a regular pattern of ridding and millage. I do about 8K miles a year but don't usually use the bike between December and March but may do 2K miles in a week when I go away.

On my 08 GSA, it is not so much a light, just the word "SERVICE" is shown in the RID...

I have noticed that when there is 400 miles or so left until the next service is due ( 6,000 miles since last reset) , it also displays the mileage left, briefly.

I believe it also works based on the number of days until an annual service is due :nenau. I do too many miles a year to see that one:D

I don't think it is a clever system with sophisticated diagnostics to work out what needs doing. Unlike cars such as Mercedes, which monitor oil viscosity and level and air filter breathability.

As far as I can tell, dealers just perform the normal recommended service actions.

The only difference I have noticed with respect to servicing is dealers now complete and issue a the official BMUU service check sheet, listing all items that have allegedly been seen to.

I believe the software driving the indicator is based on the Audi system which primarily consists of a complex algorithm taking data from the sensors fitted to a) the dealer's bank account and b) the owner's bank account.

The level and rate of decrease of a) is measured and constantly compared to the level and rate of increase in b). The software calculates the optimum point at which the largest proportion of b) can be transferred to a) with the least amount of damage to the brand and ownership experience, whilst at the same time leaving the owner with the feeling that something may have found its way in when they bent over this morning.

OK, it says "SERVICE" I wasn't sure, I thought it might just be a lamp:nenau
I have heard some of the car versions could tell you one month it needs a service and the next it needs new brake fluid or pads. This would end up costing me a small fortune in loan bikes at £25 a time + wasted time and fuel! As long as this is not the case that's OK.

No, my guess it is a simple date and mileage recording, and could be used to deny a warranty claim if either interval is exceeded ...
