Service Light

[Lost John]

Just fitted an optimser direct to the battery and despite best efforts have allowed the battery terminals to break contact with the battery.

This means i now have the word Service on.

When i switch on the ignition it somes up with the date 10:2010 which would be right for the next service date wise but then the word Service stays on even with the engine running.

Anyone know how to reset? I know BMW will be able to with some fancy tool but some BMW and Audi cars can be done by pressing a sequence of buttons.

Any ideas?

Locate someone who has one of these GS-911 tools. Sure i read awhile back it can reset service request.

Drop into your dealer next time you're passing. It's a 5 minute job for them and the computer - if they're worth their salt then they won't charge you for doing it either...

I have thos too, having connected some new stuff to the battery. my question is why the hell should disconnecting the battery cause the service module to have a fit? Doesn't do it in my BMW car.

I'd imagine its like taking the bios battery out of a motherboard. The stored data is then defaulted for safety.

What ! When I had my bike serviced in the summer, i asked the sales/reception/consultant bloke if any thing would need resetting, computer/clock wise if I take the battery out for winter storage/charge etc. He said no, and that it would be fine as long as you don't try to turn the ignition on when the battery is removed.
So, it appears they have been lying to me ? I will need a trip back down to coopers to get the computer reset then. B##tar#s !

I have exactly the same problem. BWM said that "it was strange, but don't worry".

I then plugged in my mates GS-911 and the bikes date was set 8 months into the future (i.e. 3 months before the annual service). We reset the date to the correct value and all was fixed. Why BMW could not fix this is beyond me.

Took the bike to Bahnstormer in Hampshire today and they confirmed the word Service will come up whenever the battery is disconected. Asked them to reset it for me (at same time of buying some sprokets) and they said may have to charge some labour time for it, pushed it that i was spending £80.00 on spares and they said ok no charge. Took them couple of minutes.

So moral is only disconect your battery just before a service OR buy some bits when you ask them to reset it!

Same here when I fitted my Kais heated jacket and insoles.

I just checked with BMW dealer when the next service is due and will take it in then.

Pidcocks in Nottingham seem pretty good. I had what I initially thought was a fuelling problem with the bike cutting out at speed. After playing around with the ECU we finally tracked it down to the side stand switch being clogged with mud. They replaced the switch FOC.

I know your reacting to gut instinct Santrix but I'd say the chaps from Bahnstormer were just been frank.

Got to say having visited Bahnstormers a number of times, they are far better than any other dealership I've used. Even traveling the 100+ miles from home to them, its a laid back nice bunch of people down there near Petersfield.

Have you noticed the computer sequence light ( yellow triangle ) stays on much longer than usually on startup? I dropped my bike on a trail a few days ago and now the triangle takes for ever to shut down when I turn the key and can't remember if ''service'' was on before I dropped the bike but now it's on ...I'm close to 10.000km service so maybe that why it's on but can't understand why the triangle stays on for that long now.

Funny how dealers differ so much. I had my 6k service at 9 months by BVM in Stroud, then at 12 months, 7541 miles, the service indicator came up as it was due a Brake Fluid change which I had done at BMW in Gloucester. However, BMW Gloucester refused to reset the Service indicator unless I had the 12k/2yr service (4.5k miles and 10 months early) hence I have been riding around with the Service indicator light on ever since and will get it reset in about 2 months time when it is really due for a 12k service. I thought that was really c..p and amazingly petty from a new BMW main dealer but could not be bothered to take it any further.

There is a fixed price for that job in terms of labour units. Service departments are their own cost centre.
