Service Schedule Query

I have already pointed out my last dealer knowingly left a potentially fatal flaw on my motorcycle, the bike before had a dealer service (at £600) supposedly including tappets about 1k before I bought it, I found a huge clump of flies in the airbox so got it round to a trusted mechanic who assured me the tappets had never been done as 12 out of the 16 needed changing, I would not mind paying £600 for a service that costs that much, but I bet they spent half an hour changing the oil and filter and another 30 minutes dreaming up the £600 bill.

Am I the only person on this forum to think that this sort of behaviour from dealers is wrong?

No ... I think that sort of behaviour is disgusting too but then he was a Kawasaki dealer wasn't he?

You can't tar every dealer from every manufacturer with the same brush. I have no doubt that there are good and bad BMW dealers within the network but (apart from buying the bike) you have yet to need their services however you give the impression that you think every official BMW dealer is basically dishonest and cuts corners in the name of profit? I can tell you from my experience with North Oxford Garage that simply isn't the case

Well two days riding and no FD explosion or Electrical Gremlin, so I am pretty happy.

Glad to see good reports for NOG as they are on the doorstep, from what I have heard BMW do keep an eye on the dealers service standards.

This does not happen with the Jap's, they are only interested in how many bikes a shop can sell, my local dealer lost first a Honda and then a Yamaha franchise because they did not shift enough units, yet I thought they were a good outfit.

My last dealer was not keen on warranty work either (I think they get paid less) and even told me a claim had been refused, when I complained directly to kawasaki they told me they never submitted the claim!

You get to be suspicious after being caught out with this sort of crap over the years.
 
Rasher, (of ZZR forum fame), why not do the work yourself?
Mucho satisfaction and you'll know it's been over-serviced.
Cheap official BMW service & repair DVDs can be had from eBay that detail the work, much better than a Haynes manual.

It's out of warranty, so who would really give a feck? You will sell it on here as canny punters go for a personally tended machine.

Failing that, you got your hands dirty with the Z1400 sourcing and changing disks etc. did you not? So the simplicity of a basic 1920's 1200 should be a doddle.

But, if you want to save money AND don't really trust dealers (as you end up doing everything yourself, apparently) - Though if you can't see how to get the back wheel off, then you may be a bit stumped. OK, he is in west London but it's really not far from your drum. Straight down the superslab or cross-country it's no great sweat, winter or high summer.
 
By comparison, I bought a new Moto Guzzi Stelvio in 08,from the MCN road test, sold it in 09 after 13,000 miles, a set of cam followers and about as many breakdowns, recovery back to dealer's etc. Nice bike, shame it kept stopping. Changed it for a BMW GSa,.... knowing they had faults..... so you therefore live with them.
If peeps research the bike before they buy ..........on the www. which is free..... and find a few faults.....then why the f*^k do they still buy them.......and then moan.
I would want an expert to keep the new K1600 engine sweet..... but a '1920' twin ????????????? one step up from a Ural , surely not?
