Ayeup Lad's, I am new into Gs ownership after a long time on rice burners of which I have serviced the last two myself. My bike is now due it's first service under my ownership and I have rang the nearest dealership for a quoet. I realise there is alot of computer trickery on these machines and they are a "premium" brand but I was still a little shocked to be told a 12k service would be 300 pounds for the service and another 50 quid if I want the brake fluid changed!:blast. Is this about the usual price also does anybody know of a indipendent garrage that could do the job properly for a better price?(Yorkshire area). I would do the job myself but the good old haynes bible says there are a couple of jobs that require the correct diagnostics. Any help gratefully recieved.

Regards Farmhand:beerjug:

If you have done servicing before then do it yourself. If you need to get it serviced because of a warranty and it is the extended BMW warranty then it has to be a dealer or you will void it. They are pretty simple engines to work on and no computer trickery is required unless you want the service indicator reset. Buy a GS 911 to do that and after parts your quids in for the first service and score from then on.

If you are handy with spanners, the only reason not to do the servicing yourself is to get a stamp in the book. They are childishly simple bikes on which to do the servicing - especially if you have- the pre-twin cam model with screw and locknut valve adjustment. Sure they are full of computers but generally there's nothing you can interact with apart from reading any fault codes. Independant servicing is the alternative and several good vendors are out there if you do a search in these forums

The 12,000 service on my 59 plate GS was £248 (inc VAT) at Pidcocks in Long Eaton yesterday.

Shop around, I have had quotes from £250 to £400 for my 18k service.

I am guessing BMW mechanics must all earn £50k as their hourly rate is pretty much double than of the Japanese brands so what you think your gonna save on having a simple twin to service every 6k compared to complex four cylinder sportsbikes every 4k is eaten up by ridiculous hourly rates, inflated parts prices and a shed load of common faults.

Many here think it is well worth this premium to have a BMW badge :nenau

12k service at Lind Norwich, £250 incl a front caliper strip and clean

all 3 oils changed plus engine filter, no other parts changed, valves set up and then the other usual bike checks etc

12000 mile Service kit from Sherlocks plus oils was under £60. After years of servicing Ducati's I'd got brainwashed into thinking that Italian levels of stupidity were the norm (eg to do the valves on a Multistrada 1000 you start by removing the rear carrier - seriously), and a big service can take 10 - 15 hours.

I did the 1200RT last weekend in an hour and a half without rushing - it was the easiest engine I've worked on in ages. I have the GS911 but as others have said you only need it to check for fault codes and reset the service reminder, both non essential jobs.
