Servicing - Oils

I buy the correct recommended oil (Castrol Power One 4T) on EBAY for around £30 for 4 litres. Checked my valves on the last service which was fairly straightforward but had to change four shims because the clearences were too big. The only pain in the arse was waiting for the replacment shims to arrive. Don't forget to change your final drive oil and ensure you only use exactly what's recomended. Mine stank and was black when I changed it at 11,000 miles so will be changing it at the same time as the engine oil in future ie every 6,000 miles

Here's what we use States side....

Big thread on ADV Rider,.....even someone talks about JASO MA and JASO MA2.

And that's the point - that's not marked as being suitable for motorcycles - It's just fully synthetic 5W40 oil much like the Shell Helix that i was looking at (£25 for 5Ltr)...

Morning all. My 2014 GSLC is now out of warranty but it needs a 12k service in approx 1000m or 1month. Having seen the cost of BMW servicing I'm doing the costs on doing most of the work myself apart from the valve check (I'll work my way up to that in future). I'm happy changing brake pads and fluids, air filter, oil filter, final drive oil and plugs. My question is on engine oil. Is one 5W40 oil just as good as another? I can get 5L of Shell Helix 5W40 fully synthetic for less than £24 as opposed to the BMW branded 5W40 oil which is £14.99 per litre.

I'm also presuming that if I take the bike to BMW and outline that the filters, plugs, oils etc are done they will still check the valve clearances, reset the service message and stamp the book?

I note you're a Yorkshireman!

From the above - he want's to dupe the next owner into thinking that his bike has a full dealer service-history ....... while the majority of the maintenance has been carried out by someone who gives the impression of cutting corners.........

Want's dealers to operate for shag-all, for the occasional breadcrumbs which he is prepared to toss them (to assist in the resale price of his bike).

Probably calls them "stealers" too............

So you read Richmond and just jumped to the conclusion that I'm a Yorkshire man and a potential swindler. Shame - I didn't read your posts and assume dickheads.

chill dude its just the internet:D

Well, fcuk. May as well teach myself about valve clearances...

Thanks all.

Nearly there. Just a bit more to do and then you can call your "service" a "service" instead of just an oil and filter change.

Well is not.:(

Just called Comma to enquire about the oil spec they supply to Halfords. The tech chaps told they DO NOT recommend this oil in the LC.
It is rated as JASO MA which is a lower friction level than MA2 and may damage the clutch .

Doh!

The Castrol is MA2 so that's ok then.

Just had an email from Amazon about Castrol Power 1 Racing 5W-40 4T for £5.74 in delivery.

Seems a bargain so just ordered some :)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Castrol-Po...3904&sr=8-7&keywords=power+1+racing+4t+10w-40

Thanks for posting the link. On the amazon site it doesn't clearly state if this oil is for cars or bikes, so I called Castrol as I found 3 different Castrol 5w/40 oils on sale. The 'racing' oils are for bikes, so this is the recommended oil for the GS LC. Then after calling Castrol I also noticed a small bike graphic on the oil bottle
