My Dec 2006 reg 1200GS has just finished its period of warranty and reached 18K miles. I am planning to do my own servicing from now on and wondered what others experiences were. I have serviced many bikes over the years without much difficulty, however any tips so that i don't break too much from the start much appreciated.

You live in France.

All our advice is only valid in the UK.

Ask a Frenchman or pay £12 for full site membership (it's peanuts in EUR) and help may come your way. How much of it is sensible of course, is open to debate.

The basics are just that - pretty basic. Engine oil, gearbox oil, oil and air filters are dead simple. Valve clearances are pretty simple to check and adjust too. Final drive oil slightly more complicated on older models, as you need to detach the final drive unit to drain.

(I take mine to a local mechanic for a once-over and brake fluid changes.)

Thanks for the warm welcome. If you are ever in Normandie, please don't look me up.

WTF :nenau What a strange reply to a straightforward question

Nice reply :thumb2

- Now let's stay technical henceforth ;)

dont forget the brake fluid a bit tricky as the control unit is under the tank and involves a bit of stripping but nothing too difficult just time consuming.

If you are a competent home mechanic you'll enjoy working on the GS, it's very straightforward, and rewarding when running sweetly through your own efforts. Lots of nonsense spouted concerning the CANBUS electrics, don't worry as they pretty much take care of themselves. You will definitely need some form of synchronising tool for the throttle bodies, such as a home-made manometer, carbtune or twinmax. Without it, you'll never get the best from the boxer twin.

When refitting the rocker covers after checking the valves, take care with the seal for the spark plug tube, otherwise you'll get oil all over your boots next time you ride. Reseat it on the rocker cover before fitting.

A wealth of info in the public domain on UKGSer and ADVrider etc, do your homework for the tips and tricks and you'll have no worries.

It's worth subscribing to the forum for a small annual fee to help this service to exist, but that's your choice. And don't be put off by the banter, it sounds hostile to newbies here but it's mostly tongue-in-cheek.
