Used prices

Have a look at Bike Trader online and also BMW's own used bike finder. I was in the market recently for an R1200ST and could not believe the wide difference in prices for ex-demo bikes circa 6 months old from BMW dealers. Approved used BMW ranged from £9,250 down to £7,950. Some slight differences in the spec but most were loaded with ABS, heated etc so this did not account for the difference. The lowest cost one actually came with panniers as well. GS's did seem to have higher prices for similarly aged bikes but there are a lot of them out there now so deals can be had.

The dealers with BMW car garages attached seemed to be offering the best prices presumably as they made their main profits from 4 wheels. £100 would see a bike delivered most anywhere in mainland UK. I took the BMW approved print out to my local dealer and cut a deal. Did not get down to the lowest price but the few hundred difference in buying locally means I can more easily get a hold of the man who sold me the bike if it goes wrong !

Hi Degsy,

well there's nothing like getting information straight from the horses mouth, so I thought it prudent to kep you informed of the situation of service work being performed by BMW specialist's, rather than by BMW dealers.

The dealer network provides service work, as per BMW's schedule and therefore guarantees warranty cover, subject to the machine being fully serviced as per the schedule.

Specialists perform servicing without access to all of the diagnostic equipment, in particular the complex GT1 system, which is used to both read the fault memories and to pressure test Integral ABS systems.

If the full service schedule has not been performed then warranty items may become void.

Food for thought eh?

To maintain your warrant you have to have had the bike serviced as per manufactureres recommendations. Which means you can service the bike yourself, as long as you keep receipts of the parts you use, etc.

The only problem is the BMW service shedule asks that you check fault codes, update software etc., which is a bit of a problem for the home enthusiast.

Personally, when the 12GS is out of warranty I will do the 6k service and let the dealership do the 12k.

hi Reggie,
thanks for your info back, just what i thought really just wanted to be 100% sure. It was the software updates/diagnostic's i was wondering about. :thumb

Are you really sure about that statement ;)

Don`t forget to take into account the person who may be operating the wonderful machinery at the dealership. If for instance the very experienced and respected technician leaves a dealership; one with many years of BMW familiarisation and then sets up by himself, is then replaced by someone who may not be as competent and thorough, then who would you want tinkering with your pride and joy?
Just a thought...............

I for one would have my gs serviced at William's,I have found there service deptartment excellent and very professional. This also includes the tech's some more than others :thumb mentioning no names :thumb .
The only thing is the wavering bank balance, but you get what you pay for and if there is trouble with the bike after the service you can go back and complain(warranty).

The statement made by Grandtrousers is not aimed at anyone we both know? is it? :spitfire

The statment I made is not directed at anyone in particular. I have had excellent service at Wiliiams and will continue to use them. :thumb

Unless you absolutely have to get it serviced by a main dealer, I wouldn't waste your money. After all, when you walk into a BMW showroom, who pays for the glass and chrome fittings and free coffee. Use an independent, on a individual basis, their reputation is more important to them.

Remember, you could always have the service done by some who cares more and is cheaper (ie an independent) and the get a fault code test by a main dealer.

Motorrad services did some work on my bike and he also checked the fault code status on my 1100. At that time he was trying to get the kit for the 1200's. Give him a ring a ring, he might have it by now.
