Servo ABS fluid change cost?

Debate

Well that caused quite a debate!
Thanks for taking the time to reply guys :beerjug:

I'm still not sure whether the DIY fluid change I've read about on here (including the link to the American instructions) changes the fluid within the servo unit its self, or just above and below it?
None of the specialist independent BMW service guys will do a fluid change on the servo abs bikes, if the diy instructions on here do change the complete system then why not? Seems there's maybe more to it than that? :nenau :nenau

Oh yes they do. I'd check your facts.

I stand corrected :blast it's a shame you didn't have a branch in my kneck of the woods.

So, if you dont mind passing on your advice please Steptoe, do the procedures for bleeding servo abs posted on this forum result in a full fluid change, including the fluid in the servo unit its self?

I change mine every two years. I believe you need something like a mityvac to do it.

Some independents don't seem happy doing this but I can do it so I don't really understand why.

Once you have instructions to follow it's not too bad to do but I would buy a mityvac (£35).

Cheers, Colin.

I haven't read the ADV rider "how to" as i don't have a spare day to read through it :D.

You have all the bleed nipples on the servo unit to bleed/change everything.

.

A mityvac is not needed, in fact it makes it hard work. Just use the bikes own servo, much more efficiant. Turn ignition on, touch brake lever, fluid is pumped :D

Thanks for that too Colin, any chance you could point me to the instructions you use? :bounce1

I've done some searching on ADV for you:

A comment from Steptoe:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2018218&postcount=5

The hall of wisdom document he refers to:

http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/service_abs3.pdf

Use the above document for the correct sequence (important).

I've also seen posts from Steptoe saying that the servo pumps fluid through pretty quickly, so make sure you don't empty the reservoir and pull air in.

Read the ADV rider thread, but ignore all the advice about special tools, funnels and blocks of wood for shims and so on and so on ................ Just take in the actual mechanics of the job, ignore all the bullshite.

Thanks

I'd like to say a big thank you to Steptoe, MattW, Colin and everyone else that has taken the time to give me advice on this :bow
I'm going to have a go at doing it myself rather than pay the dealer, not just to save the cost but so that I know it has been done. I might wait till after I've been to the Dolomites next month though, just in case.....

Steptoe, are you sure you wouldn't like to open a branch north of the border? Maybe a MacSteptoe's?
