Servo Failure - Rear Brake

2003 GS with servo. After not using the bike for 6 weeks went out for a ride and all fine for the first 7 or 8 miles then the brake warning lights came on. Lower light on continuously, upper flashing fast.

Carried on riding & it was soon apparent that whilst the front brake was working alright there was no servo assistance to the rear - residual only.

Have read lots of previous posts on this issue and checked things like cable integrity & the brake light & switch. All seems ok.

In short: the front brake works, the servo whines but it has no effect on the rear brake.

Is there anything left to check other than the servo pump itself?

I notice there's a blanked-off brake pipe coming off the fron right-hand side of the servo unit. Is this a checking point?

Is this a dealer only job?

Any pointers much appreciated.

Perhaps the battery is running low. The ABS gets turned off on non-servo 1150's when the battery voltage is too low. Perhaps the same happens with servos? I'm just guessing.

Maybe you've just got a load of crap in the brake caliper so it's seized during your time off. Again, just guessing.

That's the kind of thing I'd be checking after a long lay off in the winter.

Try replacing the rear tail/stop light bulb and checking the contacts.

I had exactly the same problem about 4 weeks ago, Although on mine, the servo stayed on (whirring) when the back brake pedal was pushed - almost like a stuck switch. Had to turn off/on (reboot the bike) the ignition to clear, then it would be ok for a while.

Noticed, the abs/servo problems seemed to be related to the battery, Was ok when the bike had been run for a few hours and the battery had soaked up some charge, but was always dodgy in the mornings when started from cold. Put a new battery in, checked it was fully charged on the CTek and had no problems since. (been only a week or so, but looking ok so far.)

The old battery was the original and although would start the bike ok, must have been getting towards the end of life. The new OEM battery spins the starter over at about twice the speed of the old one. Only noticed the difference when the new battery went in.
