Sorry if this has been discussed before (I did search the forums), but I'm about to change bikes. I currently have a 1999 1150gs ABS (no servo) model and have bought a 2003 1150GS ABS with servo.

I see from reading various threads that its fairly straight forward removing the servo from the newer bike if it fails (or before if you want) but you remove the ABS at the same time.

Is it possible to remove the servo unit on the newer bike and use the ABS from my older bike? Or is this really going to get complicated?!

Thanks for any help.

Marc

Keep the bike clean and serviced and most importantly change the brake fluid as per service recommendations

It's usually ones that lie around that I have come across that have failed

Good Luck with the new bike

Your theory is good but you would need a complete loom off an ABS II bike and switches and "possibly" the front master cylinder but I'd need to have a delve deeper usuing a non servo frame number and a servo frame number to check

Or you could ring Motorworks or BMbikebits who both sponsor this site and ask the question

Much more involved than you can ever imagine. Forget it.

If it fails and you don't want to replace the servo unit with another servo unit which will also fail at some point in the future) do as you said and just remove the whole servo/ABS system, which is fairly straightforward - once you realise the brake lights and rear light also go through the servo unit and re-wire accordingly.
Took me a good half a day to track every wire (23 of them) from the servo unit and find their functions and which was needed and which wasn't.

I've removed quiet a few units from customers bikes when they've failed, so it's now a simple job for me and i know whats needed.

....thought it would be less than straight forward....oh well, fingers crossed it doesn't f&ck-up and gives me years of service!! (or else the whole things coming off!)

thanks to those that replied.

The answers plain - get rid of the 03. and spend all those readies you're saving on bringing the 99 up to spec. (or is that too simple)

....I did think about just spending the money on the 99 bike but for the fact it's 40,000 miles (I know thats not a huge amount, but), it needs new shocks front and back it needs a new clutch and some of the wiring loom is becoming quite perished with age.....all in all, I reckoned on having to spend a minimum of £1000 to £1500 and I'd still be left with a 10 year old bike with 40k mileage....

So after seeing a 2003 reg one with only 7k on it, I decided I'd rather put the money into the newer bike which will most likely last me a lot longer. The fact its got servo brakes is annoying but not the end of the world (my old K1200LT had them and (touch wood) they never let me down).

I'm actually thinking of keeping the 99 one too because I'm kinda emotionally attached to it!! We've done a fair bit of mileage together here and in France and its never let me down...:tears
