Is it????? If there are any differences does anyone know what they are????

At the moment its just a question, as I have first dibs on an 08 1200 GS for reasonably silly money, the downside being that the shaft drive is knackered. I'm aware of a spare shaft drive complete with everything I will need for a grand total of 200 quid. The shaft drive originally came off an RT which was a spares job. The last thing left for sale is the shaft drive, so I would value some opinions. the bike had 22000 miles on it. The shaft off the RT has about 35000 miles on it so im told, but not really any way of checking apart from trusting the guy, but I dont do trusting very easily.

How easy is it to fit myself, what tools am i gonna need, in fact any help at all would be good.

Oh and by the way the shaft on the GS whines like a 4 year old with a plate full of peas, theres loadsa movement at the rear wheel and it feels extremely clunky and gritty when you turn the rear wheel...............

A quick look at the Motorworks site for 1200GS/RT driveshafts throws up:

"20 splines at the gearbox end. Not for 08 and 10 models. Fits R1200R and R1200RT pre 01/ 08 only. "

Reads to me like there are differences (gearbox splines?) between years and models in some way. I'd be checking part numbers etc. for the specific years of GS and RT....

I am taking it you mean the final drive is gone? I have just repaired 2 of these. Mine (34000k) made the same whining noise and had a lot of movement in the wheel. I decided to investigate after reading the above thread.
There are 4 bearings in the drive. 2 that the pinion shaft runs in and 2 that the crownwheel shaft runs in. There is a large 6301 bearing just behind the disc/wheel carrier which runs outside the oil bath in the drive. This cost me £28.50 from a local bearing supplier. This is the bearing that was knackered. If you remove the wheel and disc carrier there is a circle of bolts. Undo these and you can pop out the crown wheel assembly. Push out the centre axle from the bearing and you are left with the 6301 bearing in the black casing removed from the drive. There is a seal visible. CAREFULLY lever that up (you can reuse if it's ok) and there is a circlip behind it. Remove that and the 6301 bearing will press out. That is all I needed to replace as the pinion bearings were ok. See thread for doing the pinion bearings which are more difficult, although if you have the equipment it shoulld be straightforward. patzx12 does have some of the special tools made up for the castellated nut in the drive. I hope this is what you are talking about. Sounds like it's more serios than mine though. You would need to open it up and assess first.
