Shaft inspection and re-greese

I think that the subtleties are that it is a very real issue, however, it's whether it worries you as the owner that is the deciding factor whther you'll want anything done about it. My own humble view is that my mechanical ocd would like to see my bike stay as mint as I can keep it as I've always wanted to take meticulous care of my vehicles. A hang-up from 10 years of relying on my bike as my daily transport.

How long have you been riding shaft drive bmw's ?
From my experience, this is not an issue.
OCD indeed !

I have put up many 10's of thousands of miles on shaft drive BMWs over the years and as you say, not an issue with mine BUT I still always maintained the bikes irrespective and will continue to.

You must do what suits you but it is uncharitable to criticise others who want to keep their bikes as well maintained as they can because they can and because they value old fashioned engineering values of preventative maintenance.

As I've said. This is a manufactured issue.
Completely unnecessary.
Ride it and dont worry about it.

Judging from the number of posts on shaft and UJ failure over the years, i'd say its far from a manufactured issue. It happens all the time and a little preventative fettling doesnt go amiss.

Criticised ?

Best regular remove the exhaust manifold bolts and grease them too ?

Well you missed the mark, but yes the exhaust flapper valve is greased for that very reason. Exhaust back box removed to get at it, then try to keep the flapper valve moving...

Again, because I want to keep my bike in good shape

Same here Warlord. Just look at that 14 year old 90K 1150GS...... I cherished that. And it never wanted for anything. Very OCD with servicing. Just nothing ever touched on the Drive shaft.

Do you actually do your own servicing on the bikes, if so I find it hard to believe you never once in 90K miles looked at the shaft. :nenau

Yes, 11 years I serviced it. Every year. Everything.
But not the shaft, its a shaft. In a case. Leave it alone:thumb
I remember final drives exploding. I was convinced mine was going to explode. Then i stopped worrying.

Walking blindfolded across a minefield doesn't make it any safer... you just got lucky :D

Driveshaft front boot...

Has anyone got any tips for refitting the driveshaft front boot into the swinging arm so that it actually stays there? If so, please would you let Cooper Tunbridge Wells know how it's done? Alternatively, let me know so I can do my own as I've given up any hope of the techs at Cooper managing to do it properly.

TIA.

Tell them I charge £200 per hour plus expenses.... gladly train their staff.

I use a scissor jack, to hold the Final drive up, that way you can lift the FD mm by mm, and see it on the splines perfectly, that way you can seat the boot better without having to worry about the FD, its my way and just my opinion, my cost the price of a scissor jack.
