Shaft Oil

For the 1200 series, the ONLY recommended oil is Castrol SAF-XO which is a fully synthetic gear oil EP75W90, now rebranded as Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75W90.

This is how the BMW Dealers here on this side of the Pond sell it to us consumers....

So what's going on?

Castrol SAF XO may be what BMW recommend but there are many alternatives and at a lot lower price out there. Comma Oils, Mobil and Fuchs make equivelent oils. I have been using BP 80/90 semi-synth Hypoid gear oil in my 1200gs for the gear box and final drive for the last 5 years with no detrimental effect on either. I made an informed choice with information provided by an oil analysis laboratory, that I use with my work. I sent samples of oil to said Laboratory and the concensus from them was that the Castrol was an old oil type and gave me a list of more modern equivelents. As fortune would have it the BP oil that I use is that which I use at work in the transmission/gearbox and final drives on the deisel trains that I maintain.

So what's going on?

Bmw reduced the oil quantity in the final drive to 180ml some time ago, supposed to help reduce pressure build up and leaking seals:nenau

No Oil In drive shaft area if there is oil in there You're ****ed

Oil Should be kept in the gearbox or in the Final drive unit

That is all!!!

Yes I know that but this is the manual for the 2008-2009 models so should have the reduced quantities. This is actually specifying 20ml more than the generally accepted original figure.
