Shaft seapage

Ive noticed a little black fluid coming out of the gaitor from the shaft off the back of my bike. Not much but ive only done around 1500 miles from when I collected the bike (not from new) and it was steamed perfectly clean then so its happened since then.

Im particularily worried about it getting onto the rear brake or disk.

Another GS owner said this was normal and not to worry but I cant help myself!

Happened to mine, several thousand miles ago. Seems to have gone away.

Sometimes this appears to need repairing, othertimes it just goes away

What model is it then? It would help to let the collective know.

On my 1150, I've noticed the same since a workshop did my bevel bearing. They've redone the seal twice but it still leaks through, albeit not too drastically.

Strangely, I did 57,000 miles on the original, without a drip or smudge.

Is the original sealed by a special circlip or the bog standard zip ties, like that are on there now?

Its a 03 GSA with 30k miles. I havnt seen either a circlip or a cabletie, maybe thats the problem. Its in for a service tomorrow so ill see what they think.

Sounds like the shaft seal in the final drive is on it's way out. The rubber gaitor and its cable-ties or circlips is there to stop the crud getting in, not the oil coming out. It should be dry and clean inside. It's not an uncommon problem judging by the posts

It's probably one of two.

The seal in the Final Drive or the gearbox output-shaft seal (and the oil runs down the inside of the shaft housing).

The former can weep when the FD gets hot (hotter than normal operating temperatures) and may just stop as abruptly as it starts.

Do a search on either and you'll find bags of info (mostly the good stuff comes from St. Eptoe).
