Hello,
Newbie here looking for a bit of advice having read some good answers on this forum to other peoples quandaries.
My starter for 10, feel free to answer a dumbass but why the name Hexhead?
Secondly and more importantly, I've seen an 05 plate 1200GS online for £5995 but the bolts around the engine look a bit rusty and, being the engineering numpty that I am, I was wondering how easy is it to replace them..all possibly?
I know this could mean that it hasn't been looked after that well but it's had one "mature" owner, very low milage for it's age, full kit and I'm very tempted. I saw the repainting the engine cover etc.. so I'd like to think it shouldn't be that hard...he says

Hexhead refers to the (rough) shape of the rocker covers and has been used as a description since news of the water cooled 1200 came out.

Re the bolts, do you mean the ones holding on the front engine cover or general engine bolts. It's not unusual for the front cover bolts to go manky along with the cover, mine have. If the rest, yeah no problem to replace and you could always fit stainless if you so wanted. Pre assembled kits are available.

I'd have to question though the price of the bike if all the bolts are rusty, especially if it's low mileage, as what's being asked is right at the top range for an '05. My 05 is looked after but 'used' and has a fair few miles now and the majority of fastners are still in very good nick.

for that money you should be looking to get a more recent bike, try for a 2008 model updated then and many issues resolved. Mileage not so important if you find a bike with a full service history although you will be surprised how many low mileage bikes around.
Pay your £12 subscription and search the For Sale section on here, always good bikes come up.

Just looked again. It's more of the frame bolts than the engine. They don't look too bad. The engine cover's a bit flaky, but I had heard about that.
Most of the dealer ones I've seen haven't had the luggage with it and I coudl do with the trade in at the moment....
Trust it to be about 180 miles away.

There's loads of 1200s for sale out there. No need to rush into buying one. Have a look at several to get an idea of what they should be/might be like.

MAIN dealers seem friendly enough, and have used stock. Take a mate with you to avoid "Shiny bike" syndrome. Go in with the idea that you're only going to look, not to buy.
