I bought a BWM top box at the weekend. The people in the dealers didn't exactly fit the lock barrel correctly - the whole thing pulled out with the key when I got home.

Trying desperately to avoid another return trip, I took it apart and found that somewhere along the line, it was buggered up - one spring wedged in the wrong place, one spring missing completely and one wrong plate fitted - but by luck the key still turned the barrel.

Anyway, the good news - by carefully dismantling the lock, I managed to sort it out, although I had to remove the offending plate and re-fit the spring in the "plate" that holds the barrel in place.

So, the good news: I now know how the barrels work, having previously never looked in one.

The bad news is that I needn't have spent two hours carefully trying to see how it all worked - there are two identical locks in the bloody panniers! :blast

I am glad to see that this is not a happy-clappy thread but in fact an ordinary top-box lock thread. :)

I have had trouble with lock barrels falling off whilst riding:eek:

I ended up once with three barrels missing in one journey.

BMW had a few problems with the housing on the mech and not the lock.

Warranty issue which my dealership sorted out:thumb2

These were on the Aluminium panniers of the GSA...

another one of the"features" of the variobox system I'm afraid....

This happened to me on a number of occasions - had to go and get new locks as the fitted ones vanished en route!

BMW sorted under warranty a few times until "got fed up" and refunded the whole variobox system.

Lock problems

Is there anything that BMW havent had problems with that they have produced?
No wonder they bought Rover.
They even failed at that!

Rover

Maybe they will also admit defeat with THEIR MOTORCYCLE GEARBOX AND CRANKSHAFT SEALS ,GEABOXES ,IMMOBILISERS, FINAL DRIVE SEALS/ BEARINGS, GEAR SENSOR, FUEL PUMP, OH AND CORROSION.
Reminds me of British Leylands production line of years gone by. :rob
