Refitted my 1100 cylinder head yesterday after getting it back from the local engineers who'd removed and helicoiled a broken exhaust stud. My nervousness about refitting the cam sprocket due to me setting it at TDC exhaust rather than compression turned out to be unfounded - the sprocket popped straight back onto it's key way.

Rocker endfloat was a sod - try as I might, I couldn't induce enough 'twist' in the rocker arm end cap to get inlet and exhaust as low as I wanted (it just moved as a unit and doesn't seem to have enough play to adjust each rocker play independently). I ended up setting the inlet rocker at the minimum (0.05) which set the exhaust at 0.2.

So, when it was all back together I spun it over several times by hand and nothing clashed where it shouldn't, so I refitted the plugs and pressed the button. It started fine (albeit sluggishly), but my battery (which I new was on the way out) is now dead and it won't turn it over now (despite having been on a ctek for two weeks - another £90

But, it feels good to have done it and I'd tackle similar tasks with much more confidence now. Thanks to all those who advised me and sorry about the bleating - first time nerves!

cheers
Matt

Excellent!! The feeling of achievement far outweighs the anxiety when you're surrounded by all the bits and you're wondering why the hell you started. Felt the same when I had to change the cam chain on my Honda CX500 Silverwing about 15 years ago. Engine had to come out and be split.

Mine never had the 'interstate' panniers.

we used to do cx500 camchains regularly when they were warranty jobs.

Engine out and on the floor in 15 mins :thumb
