Message lifted from another site:

North Yorkshire Police have been on a major crack down on illegal exhausts and number plates around Sherburn in Elmet and particularly near Squires coffee bar.

They have resorted to camping out on a Wednesday and Sunday pulling over any vehicle that passes on two wheels, giving out £30 ago tickets like the child catcher gives away sweets.

I feel this is just a money making racket and doesn't contribute to road safety or police/biker relations.

So if you're going to Squires put in your baffle and put a standard plate on, then they might bugger off and catch real criminals.

:)

Good info that. However it does always amuse me when people (I know it wasn't you that posted it) think that the police should catch "real" criminals. Having a non road exhaust or small plate makes them exactly that a criminal. If they didn't break the law then they could spend more time catching real criminals :D

I was there last Wednesday evening; they were stopping bikes coming in from the A1 side at random… :augie

And by the number of bikers coming to grief around the café area, it’s only a matter of time before they have some more serious crackdown, so I’d ride very steadily if you’re in the area.

Not exactly rocket science is it

Who tends to have loud exhausts, small plates, bling the fashion police would gag on? And where do they congregate apart from here and Devils Bridge :mmmm

"They" wouldnt have stopped the 2 wheeler on sunday last. Him and his "mrs" were on just one wheel, (the rear) as they left at about 1PM
(Big Suzuki I think)

Guys, If you're riding anywhere in North Yorkshire you can expect to be heavily Policed. Fact is the year has kicked off with a high number of motorcycle fatalities already in the County, and if the year continues in the same way it has started, a record high is very much in prospect.

The bosses have gone public in the past claiming credit for reducing the number of bike related fatalities, when in reality the weather had more to do with it. So they are under increasing pressure, and in danger of being left with egg on their face should the deaths go back up. A position they will be very reluctant to put themselves in.

When you consider the different 'types' of biker there are frequenting North Yorkshires roads, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that the 'Tosser' type is less likely to attract attention than, say, a Foggy lookalike. And when you see that type with not just tinted, but black visors, number plates that you can hardly see let alone read, and cans you hear long before you see them it's not hard to see why. And perhaps surprisingly, it is that very type who complain the most about being stopped and ask if the Police 'have nothing better to do'.

The answer is a resounding yes, we do have much better things to do, unfortunately we are kept from doing them by wannabe's on missiles they cannot handle, throwing themselves down the road.

My advice, if I may, is not to worry too much about this higher level of attention. No one is out to get 'everyone'.........just those who bring it on themselves.:thumb2

squire's

hiya there, i was up at the squire's cafe two wks ago, on the way out under the bridge about a mile down the road there was two heap's of gravell at the side of the road on the right with the bill and a hand held speed gun hiding, had he not have pulled a biker i would have been the next victim be cheated out of my hard earned money, i have no problems with being done for speeding if its fair cop, but what they are doing just proves the spirit of dick turpin still lives on in yorkshire, that's bloody high way robbery!,

As KMD said a long standing trail rider & sports bike rider were killed in collision above otley 2 to 3 weeks ago aka 10 am time.Following weekend not far away at bolton abbey, near fuel station 1 rider was killed aka 10 am.I rider killed in hellifield by car backing out, smack in village centre.Last week out trail riding, crap start to day & turning right to next trail.Me at back, sports bikes had bearing down passing cars behind.Aka 11am.I thought i was very lucky not to be the next, ride was in memory to to the Late Gorden Thackery, the 1 arm trail rider for over 30 years. They deserve all they get, especially going to poser,s place,s like Squires.

No offense mate, but if you speed and get pulled you have only yourself to blame, it’s your hand on the throttle, not the Bills.

Easy there guys

Yorkshire is full of brilliant roads, just stay off of the popular ones.

We travel to places like Helmsley, Castle Howard, Rosedale etc from Beverley "the long way" probably doubling the distance in many cases ( well it's all about the journey rather than getting there ) using the main roads only as a crossing point to the next minor one.

The roads can be challenging (mind that cow sh*t), scenic, fast and swoopy or just plain fast. Either way the roads are generally very quiet and without the attentions of the police or the knob heads that attract them.

I stumbled across this post whilst searching for something else.

I was really pleased to read some of the comments on this thread, as I have really lived these issues myself.

Being a serving police officer for 20yrs, a roads policing officer working often on a motorcycle since 1994. I am also a committed GS'er, having had my a chain of my own bikes, Super Tenere, ZZR1100, ZX9R, Firestorm, VFR. and GS. I've done the 'Ring, TT and followed BSB. I commute 100 miles a day on two wheels. It would be fair to say I have a reasonably rounded view of motorcycling having seen the best and worst of it.

In November last year, we moved from a good sized town to a small cottage that backs directly onto a B class road on a 'classic bikers' route in the Dales. The road outside is subject to a 30MPH speed limit. On a summers Sunday, I would not be at all surprised if over 100 bikes pass our home.

Living in such proximity to the road has really opened my eyes to the issues of motorcycles, their use and construction. I thought I knew the issue from my profession but to live by one of these roads is so different.

I love vehicles, I'm one of those sad people who winds down my window to listen to that Ferrari V8 when it overtakes me. But believe me, you couldn't imagine how irritating it is when I am just doing my everyday home stuff and someone rides or drives by with a race exhaust. Sometimes the most simple pleasures of life, such as washing and polishing my car/GS, or perhaps just enjoying a brew whilst watching my hens, can be spoilt by less than one percent of motorists. And it is no more than one percent of them, be they cars or motorcycles.

When I bought my GS, I nearly swapped the end can for a BS marked aftermarket one as I liked the fruity sound the demonstrator had. Not now. Years ago, I used to be negative about the ever increasing intervention of the EEC regarding noise. I now absolutely support them on this.

So all I'd ask is that irrespective of the law, please just spare a thought for us country people when you look at 'enhancing' or 'improving' your GS. It's not just about it being BS marked, or 'Not for Road Use'.

Happy motorcycling!

Well said Smalsey - the Sherburn thing with the police has been an ongoing discussion since I started going there in 1979.

If you have noisy exhausts and illegal plates you deserve the pull - not sure how the Harley rides will like it though

Do they pull Harley riders for noisy exhausts, dont think I've seen that.

targetted policing of sertain roads

To commit Road Policing resources to a certain road at a certain time will be done in reply to a reason or complaint.

The reason would be a high number of KSI collisions . ( killed serious injury). that would be the B1222 which in comparision with other roads has a high number of fatal motorcycle collisions year upon year.

Or a complaint made to the police about ASB (anti social behaviour) or speeding. The two go hand in hand when the complaint is investigated the speed is often percieved speed the perception coming from the noise generated by a 4 cylinder petrol engine at high revs.

An aquaintance bought a new Hardley a couple of years ago, and I was amazed at how quiet it was during a test ride.
I saw it a year later when he had taken an angle grider to the saucepipe.
It was then making an appalling racket.
Don't blame the bike, blame the owner.

Been riding me 1200GS for close to 6 years now..always with a black visor on me Arai (except in the dark) ..and lately with a Remus trumpet.
At the risk of tempting fate, only ever been tugged once by mobile speed cameras.
But as me Pa says: "If you don't want trouble, don't go where trouble is."

There's a zillion roads in our country........don't be obvious...

Roads of North Yorks.....It's all too simple.....

Wear a clear visor, and don't feck aryound with your number plate (what's that about?) or exhaust, and day to day, you will be left alone. You can get away with plenty, if you can tick all the other boxes.....;)

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I was stopped for a vehicle check...:thumb2

April last year. France. Myself & 2 others travelling towards boat at Caen.
1 of others on KLR650 with very noisy exhaust. Other on DRZ400 with the noisest exhaust I have ever heard. I could not travel behind him at closer then 100 metres or I gor a headache. I let them go on around 40 secs ahead of me.
I could not stand the noise. Travelling at circa 120/130Km/Hr.
Came round a corner.
Police had both others pulled in & wearing out pencils.
They did not notice or hear me as I passed them. (Std. BMW saucepipe)
I rode on to next layby & polished bike whilst I waited the 15 mins it took for them to extricate themselves.
Maybe there is a message here.
