My 1150GS passed its MOT on Wednesday but with the advisory that the rear shock is on its way out (not too bad for 56k miles). I've looked through lots of threads on after market replacements but haven't decided on which one to go for. One thing that does occur to me is if I replace the rear is it worth replacing the front at the same time as a matched pair or will a new rear work fine with an OE front ???

They'll work together OK, but you'd be amazed at the difference a new front makes.

A man of your means might as well do them both... :D

With my clutch on its last legs you're 'avin' a giraffe mate

Mind you a matched pair of Wilbers would be very saucy :augie though I'm also thinking about a 'pre-loved' OE set :nenau

I remember reading somewhere that Ohlins need servicing every 15k (?), does anyone know what the score is for the alternatives ???

Don't bother with the dodgy old Ohlins. Get a pair of Maxtons, beautifully made and made in England as well. Not only superb shocks but you get a nice warm glow from flying the flag as well. http://www.maxton.netspinners.co.uk/

I'm afraid I've lost confidence in Maxton, they rebuilt my Ohlins and made a right mess of it. Maxton specialise in road/racing suspension but not offroad.

It's now with Kais who specialise in Ohlins and offroad.

my maxton is still faultless after 15000 hard miles on and off road and two up touring.

Just put a new WP rear shock on. It's a basic model without remote adjustment. This makes it a pain as it looks like I'll have to drop it down to use the adjusters because there's no way of getting the spanners in. Unless someone has a better idea, it looks like removal of wheel, unbolt shock and then adjust

Let you know how it behaves, it's a bit hard solo, but with luggage...

I fitted front and rear Ohlins to my 1150 at 50000 miles what a difference like a new bike :thumb2
