Short break Ireland to Wales.

We followed the map I had plotted on Sally-sat-nav and headed for an area called Abergwesyn. I only knew this name on the map. I also knew this would take us back towards the phone box, and base, on a road we hadn't done before. However, I had no idea that it was as stunning an area as it is...20240724_162305.jpg

The weather was starting to turn again so we headed for home. One last pleasant surprise awaited us though.

The Devil's Staircase.

I knew it was around here somewhere, and indeed I had been told on here that the road from Abergwesyn to the phone box included the Devil's Staircase.

With all I had been taking in over the last few days I had completely forgotten about it. Its only when I saw the sign for the 25% inclination I remembered where I was. (I has seen the sign on Rest Day Rider's youtube video).

What a road!

No photos as I was too busy concentrating on riding.

For any Irish lads who haven't done it: Think of the elevation changes on the Copper Coast, the technical twisties of the Healy Pass, and multiply by a factor of 4 and your kind of getting there. You just need to hope that you're not going to meet oncoming traffic. 🫣 there are a few blind bends and crests. It's mostly 1st and 2nd gear though so speed is low.
Thoroughly recommended.

We didn't meet any other traffic, and it had stopped drizzling again by the time we were on it. What a buzz!

We got back to Tregaron elated and tired, after another great day's adventure.

I went to the Spar and got some provisions for sandwiches on the ferry and 1 beer for myself to mark the last night in Wales. I also took the opportunity to take a few shots of Tregaron.

Great stuff, thanks for writing this up.
Just shows that you don’t have to go far to have a good trip - obviously it was abroad on a ferry for you!!

Day 4: Thursday 25th June 2024.
Going home😥

Stuff was packed. Panniers clipped back on. Bike was loaded. Breakfast was had. We said goodbye to our host and brilliant accommodation, but not before enquiries about booking our next stay there. As I said, we will be back.

Ferry departure wasn't until 2 so we had plenty of time to bimble back to Fishguard. Stopped in Cardigan for coffee and pastries in a place called Crwst. Very nice too. Sat outside, and watched the world go by. It was quite busy I thought.

Ferry boarding went as smoothly as the outbound stage, although the cars seemed to be a more free-for-all here. Checked in grand, got through security grand, but had to sit behind a car being checked for quite a while.....

Boarding grand, bikes strapped down for us and I tied up the front brake with a bungee. Helmets went into the top box and the rucksack with all our necessaries for the ship came out of it.

Went on deck for a bit before heading for the Hygge lounge. Once you have your seats it's fairly safe to leave some items there, jacket, lunch, magazines etc (but I still kept wallet/valueables etc on me) while walking around the ship. I hadn't realised that there is complementary tea/coffee in there. So depending on how much you drink you probably pay for one of you by saving on buying it in the cafeteria.

It was also much quieter and more comfortable. The 3.5 hours seemed to pass faster too.

Disembarking in Rosslare was even more straightforward. Straight out of the ship and straight out of the port. I didn't even get time to stop to put earplugs in....

Was hitting the late bit of rush hour traffic between Rosslare and Wexford but no major delays. Between Wexford and Waterford however we met the first real heavy rain of the whole trip. This necessitated a stop at the side of the road to dress like Gardai Mushman & Mushman... by the time we got near Waterford it was stopped.
However the roads were soaking so we ended up staying in the gear till Dungarvan.

Home at about 8:30pm.
Monday Jul 22 to Thursday Jul 25.
Approx 1200kms done over the 4 days, every one of them a joy.

(Well, maybe not some of the wet ones in Ireland..)

We have a longer trip planned for Brittany in September. The short Wales jaunt was intended as a dry run for this. However we both had agreed by the second morning we were going to do this again.

Found a spot in my work calendar.
So I'm off again next week! If you see us say hello!

Thanks for the picture of Marlene…how has it been such a money pit?

Aren't they all?

To be fair she's been worth every cent but buying it first from a main dealer, then sticking with them for servicing as she's still under warranty means lots of €€€€.

2 services, second was valve clearance check.
She's on her second set of tyres since I bought her and getting a new rear on tomorrow.. 2up is burning through them and I expect to put another 3k kms on her on the France trip. What's on her is still legal but won't last the trip I'd say.
Not to mention farkles, new gear bits for us both (Mrs M considers anything for the bike as free and necessary from the budget) and 3 foreign trips in as many months....

Going to be pootling through Wales this weekend so this has appeared in a very timely fashion. Thanks loads for posting - tips will come in handy. (y) :)
