Should an oddersey go totally flat ?

Alright then
Should an oddersey battery totally discharge after 6 weeks ?

No.

They hold their charge very, very well (IME better than 'normal' batteries) so there is either a fault with the battery or something on the bike draining it.

You wouldn't ,by any chance, have left it connected to your Charger?

I think I may have fried my PC680 by a combination of letting it go flat over extended periods of time and then either slow charging with an Optimate III or jump starting it from the car. I must have jump started at least 10 times before I read that PC680's don't like being jump started.

£100 wasted:blast Just ordered a replacement cheapy battery for £30. Problem solved - hopefully...

It's on my 2003 twin spark 1150 gs & I usually have it connected to a ctek trickle charger but forgot to plug it in after last trip

I assume that you mean that you jump started the bike which had the oddysey fitted, using the car?

Did you have the car running when you did it? Oh dear :blast

Correct way.....connect battery with car OFF, put neg connection to both, then positives, with the car one being the last (miniscule risk of hydrogen being around but that's the way we taught AA patrols to do it)

DO NOT start the car, and do not attempt to start bike for at least 5-10 minutes....

Going the other way around, I have jump started my Landy from the GSA on more than one occasion......just gotta leave the bike running for half an hour (watching temp) before attempting to start Landy

Thanks for that:thumb Little late now but interesting and useful. Yep I jump started the bike from the car with the car running. Many times. Out of interest why does this feck the battery and does it specifically relate to a PC680 or all bike batteries? Ta:)

Car alternator will push more amps into the flat battery than it really likes, although I doubt that would do much damage if you got it started and got the jump leads off fairly quickly (internal heating of the battery is likely to be the most destructive thing in the short term, and they'll take quite a few minutes to heat up). I suspect you wrecked the battery by running it flat a dozen or so times, they really don't like that...

Odyssey batteries aren't made of special magic.

They're just a lead acid battery that is built to trade capacity for cranking power (and which don't fit properly and cost too much). Their chemistry and behaviour is just the same as any other lead acid battery. They self discharge just like any their battery and ideally should never be discharged to more than half of their capacity. If you've got accessories, an alarm or if you've already knackered it by previously flattening it, then yes, it could easily flatten in a few weeks

As ahutcheon says flattening a lead acid battery completely (even just once), irreversibly reduces its capacity and its even worse if it's left flat for any length of time and / or has been flattened repeatedly. Once you've done this, no fancy charger will recover it. It'll just charge it to its new, reduced capacity and say everything is fine.

Unfortunately, yours is probably toast now - it's time to think about a new battery and some sort of trickle charger (Ctek / Optimate etc if you haven't already got one) to keep it healthy.
