After a few days touring in October, my '94 1100GS seemed to be noisier on the right hand side. The valve clearances had been recently checked, so I had a look at the cam chain tensioner instead. Good job it was the RHS - with the bike on the sidestand you can take the tensioner out without draining the oil.
The tensioner movement was kind of sticky, as if there was a bit of grit or a burr somewhere, and it was visibly scored like this:
I cleaned it up with fine emery paper, and the movement seemed much smoother. Since then I haven't noticed the same rattle... or rather, it's the same on both sides
If I was going by the book I'd replace the tensioner as it shows obvious signs of wear. But because the bike is running OK I'm tempted to leave it. Does this sound reasonable?
