In four positions, very expertly done - I have to say.

Can you remove the threaded caps without damaging the thread now the've been punched (it's not a 'crimp' by the way :thumb). The thread is very fine so I'd guess not :nenau

Actually they haven't been 'punched' - the tool that did the job provided a continuous increasing pressure rather than a short hard shock, so I will stick with the word 'crimp' :D

Allegedly the thread hasn't been damaged - can't quite see that, but even if it is this part is unlikely to ever need removing and the whole lot could be replaced if necessary.

They've made a fair few scratches to the chrome too, with the holding tool:blast

I would be a bit miffed..........

No that's just grime from the dirty bike (was about the wash it) as I prised off the rubber cover so that I could take a look.

The modern way. Manufacture it so that when/if it breaks it cannot be repaired only replaced by a new part from the original manufacturer. Just a general point not trying to adversely comment on your new bike

OH MY GOD ... just been in the shed. Someone must have broken-in and fitted LC fork stanchions to my 1150, because Ive got these 'crimps' as well.

Will I now get tank slappers ?

You'll be ok as long as you leave it in the shed:thumb2

That's interesting

Seems like the 1150's were done that way too - nothing new really, just that BMW's supplier must have forgotten to do it on the some of the new bikes or decided that it wasn't necessary and then changed there minds????

I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so...

My last GS was an 04 model new on a 57 plate. So been out what 3-4 years.

I had several recalls for brake lines and software updates.

Had the fuel sensor strip go and I had the stickers sent to me to remind me the hand guards "could" foul the leavers.

I think it's called continuous improvement!!!

As far as I believe, all 1100/1150, and presumably 1200s have these dimples. I believe they might be there to fit a clamping tool into whilst removing the cap or as part of the machining process instead of clamping onto the smooth surface of the fork leg.

But there again ..... what do I know :nenau
