Hi there, yet another question that I can't find answers!
Side stand cutout switch, is it possible to delete same, without causing canbus issues? I was riding today in heavy rain, traffic lights changed quickly so I pulled up....and stalled the bike. I was in third gear, facing uphill on a wet road, with a car sat on my rear wheel, and just couldn't find neutral!
On my other bikes I could start the engine in gear, and slip the clutch or find another gear, so how can I cut the clutch wires? On my R1100RT I just cut the wires and joined them together, but there was only 2 wires.
I'm sure others have done this, its a bloody nuisance at times like this!

And for those who think this 'safety device' is needed, please consider this: I'm 61 years old, and have been riding bikes since I was about 12 years old. Bikes didn't have 'safety' things like sidestand and clutch lever cutouts. Then Honda in around 1984 added a big rubber doofer on the sidestand, so it flicked up when you set of with stand down. The thing is, once you set off with the stand down, you didn't do it again. Mainly because the bike bucked like a rabid animal, and all your mates fell about laughing... :thumby:

Where exactly does the sidestand fit in the scenario you illustrated above at all? I’m confused.

Do you mean the clutch microswitch?

My problem was that I'd stopped, after stalling the engine, and after dropping the side stand, couldn't restart the engine whilst in gear: so yes, I see that the clutch cut out is the real issue 😯
I was thinking that when the bike is in gear, you cannot restart it...that's just the clutch switch then? I was thinking that when the bikes is gear, you cannot drop the side stand without stopping the engine.

To by-pass the side stand switch join the Brown and White leave the red disconnected.
On a hill engage the handbrake.

Hello again. Can I just verify what I need to do, to be able to start the bike, whilst in gear? I'm just getting more confused the more I think about it!

If you cannot start in gear with the sidestand up it is 99% sure the clutch microswitch is failed

IF you have access to to motoscan or GS911 I think you can "watch" the switch for activation when pulled

If not then I would just fit a new clutch lever microswitch! and continue diagnosing from then if needed

Sidestand switch stops you RIDING in gear (with sidestand down),
Clutch switch stops you STARTING engine in gear (without clutch disengaged).

My clutch switch failed years ago, my bike wouldn't start in gear the same as your situation above. I replaced the switch and it was fine after.
With the side stand down it won't start in gear. Trying to fine neutral when stalled was a pain in the ass off road.

If you end up removing the micro switch beware it is fixed in place with a tiny grub screw. Very easy to lose!

On the 1150s you could hear the micro switch "click" when pulling the lever. No click = broken switch.
Even though, most times the culprit was the little metal tab. Not the switch itself.

I think it might be the same on 1200s (I had it replaced one ages ago) but less noticeable.

Don’t put the side stand down, and it’ll start in gear with the clutch pulled in …, you said you’re 61 with many years of riding and don’t need such things .. ., so why are you putting your side stand down after stalling at the traffic lights ?

I was going to say the same.
I wouldn't "remove" the sidestand switch if you have to put the stand down after stalling the bike on an incline (nothing wrong with that) on the road.

Especially in those situations, rushed, stressed, distracted, it's easy to forget it down when in gear.

As Steptoe says, it should start in gear with the clutch pulled in UNLESS the side stand is down.

If it won't do the above, check the microswitch is making when the clutch lever is pulled, you can hear it click and its adjustable by slackening the tiny retaining grub screw (don't unscrew it too far out or you might lose it). If that doesn't sort it, replace the microswitch.

Does the neutral light not showing also stop the bike from starting even tho the bike is in neutral on a Gs 1100 steptoe.

As long as the side stand is up it should start with the clutch lever pulled in.
Cheers Steptoe; i'll keep an eye on it; my gear indicator has'nt worked for years so i was assuming the nutral light playing up from time to time could also be part of the problem as well; :beerjug:

The 1100 clutch switch isn’t the most robust item :D
