First off 1300 miles and 2 months without any problems, very happy.
Until yesterday that is when I tried to start it on the centre stand with the side stand down, it wasn't in gear & the bike had just been washed. Started and then conked out. Tried a couple of times then put side stand up and no more problems.
Today climbed on board with both the stands up, the bike started and ran OK but as soon as put in gear it cut out. Tried a couple more times with the same result. Put the side stand up and down a few times to exercise the sensor and no more problems.
Seems like back to BMW for a new sensor. I know this is an ongoing problem, does anyone know a final fix? If the sensor isn't modified then the problem will probably be back in another couple of months.
Also, while it's in the workshop should I get the fuel pump checked for water on the connections?
Any help appreciated

Bad news -"They all do that sir" is the answer i'm afraid.Found this out for a couple of people last week. The bottom line is don't start the bike up on the centre stand with the propstand down.
Hope this answers your question or have i inadvertently opened a can of worms here?

Probably......

My normal starting procedure is all stands up, in nuetral, free the clutch, wait for check procedure to finish (yawn) and hit the button......

Only had the bike about 2-3 weeks when it started and stopped several times one morning - thanks to this super forum, a little voice sng out somewhere in the murky interior of my mind - sidestand - it said. Whacked it up and down a few times and bingo, all was well with the world again.

PS - has only done this the one time...... :( :) :D

Did this at work today....trying to start on mainstand with sidestand down. It fires, then dies.

Good job I remembered this post.........I'd have been well and truely kippered if it wasn't for this forum :beerjug:

It's probably the gear selector sensor?

The bike may think it's not in neutral, and hence cuts out cos the stand is down. Happened to me once after I washed the bike but a good dose of WD40 later it was cured.

The sensor is on the back of the engine, near the shock absorber.

A very useful thread.

I had the exact same starting problems from the time it started to get colder. Strangely, only in the mornings (after it has been parked on the centre stand overnight) but never in the evenings (after being parked in almost equal cold on the side stand). I mentioned it when I was at SPC (Alton) to pick up some parts. They checked it out immediately (for free) while I had a delicious (free) doughnut and fine (free) coffee (did I make clear this an ace dealer?).

Mechanic said the diagnostic showed a fault but since the bike was hot :) he couldn't run it properly. Certainly pepped up the bike but didn't solve the cold start problem.

Thanks for the info. Now a week and starting on the side stand, no problems at all.

Cheers

Andy
