My HP2E has sat in the shed for a few weeks and it started fine but when I put the bike into gear the engine cuts out!

The sidestand is up and when I restart the bike and put it into gear again the engine cuts out again. If I give the sidestand a hard knock or two when putting it up the bike will go into gear without stalling.

All of this reminds me of when we were touring on Skye a few weeks ago and my HP2 started 'missing'. I was concerned about this for a few miles but the next day the bike was fine and I didn't need to call BMW Assist.

I have the BMW Extended Warranty and my local dealer is only half an hour away but do I get them to replace the switch or just 'bypass' the switch and forget about it as no doubt the new switch will fail again anyway.......!

Any advice appreciated and what wires do you join together as I can't remember and my 'search' hasn't turned up anything although I do remember a post about this a while ago.

Thanks FP.:thumb

I had mine give me issues twice now. It's made a lot worse by the OEM stand bracket which wears, putting more pressure on the switch. For a while, I carried a spare but now I've just cut it off. The fix is to splice the brown and white wires, (I think ;) ) and don't forget to put the stand up when you ride away :blast

While you're at it, you might want to consider getting Woodys replacement stand bracket - much stronger and also makes the bike stand quite a bit more upright, which is especially useful if you're running an 18" rear.

Hope that helps :thumb2

One of the most common DS bike faults - many who do trans continent tours etc disconnect the switch as a matter of course before even setting off.

Re-wired mine out got pissed off with BMW changing it, BMW had a habit of sticking a new one on if it went in and binning my field fix, they have given up now. After insisting it needs one. :augie :aidan Bollocks said I it's shit take it off, or I'll put the bike in the truck and make another bypass wire anyway.....

Bypass wire
Connect Brown to white wire at switch terminal do not brake into loom. Get the other half of connector that plugs in to the loom from auto electrician, and pins and 25mm wire fit pins and push pins into correct slots in the connector with water proof grommets add some silicon electrical grease. One trailside repair to carry in the tools or a permanent fix zip tie out of the way to the frame :D

Now the next switch to get the treatment will be the clutch :blast

To all.

Dont bother getting BMW to replace the switch it will fail again, and again and again.
Cut the switch off, and as said, join the brown and white wires.

Symptoms of faulty switch:
* Misfiring
* Random engine stops
* Bike not starting

Exactly.
However if someone wants to cure the problem and not bypass it...
The cause of the switch failing is the aluminium sidestand BRACKET.BMW now provides a steel bracket.Change both the bracket and the switch and no more failings.

Is the stand on the Megamoto the same one? Also can you share a picture of the new steel bracket please.

It's installed on my HP2E 4 months ago.Black painted steel.When i got it i also reconnected the switch and all is fine so far.The aluminium bracket can't stand the weight,deforms,and thus the switch failure.Even if someone bypasses the switch,the aluminium bracket continues to bend and the bike is leaning left more and more until falling.I don't know what is the MM bracket,if it's alu or steel.Seems that a steel bracket is inevitable for the E owners sooner or later.Price is about 150 Euros.

Had to bin mine in france a few weeks back, it was causing a miss fire and cutting when i put it into gear, the usual fault.
I have stripped off the stand and the alli bracket is well bent and worn.
So emailed 'Woody', they are waining for a batch of the stainless steel replacements but non in at moment and they will be $300 posted. YES $300.
thats $225 for the part and $75 postage.
This all sounds a little expensive to me to say the least.
I am trying to get my brother in law top produce one in stainless, he has an engeneering company so will keep you all posted.
I recon if he can knock them out for about 50 quid it could be a runner.
what do you all recon.

Had a close look at mine today, it is a billet milled Aluminum piece that the stand is hooked up to, so I'm guessing it must be the exact same thing you guys in the E have. If you make a stainless version put me down for one please.:beerjug:

I thought the hole point of a HP2 was about being light wieght for a monster dirt bike:nenau, every mod I have made has made the bike lighter so how about Titanium:D stronger than SS:thumb
That would the way to go shorly, other than cost so how much for T.I.T.S.Mmm(TITANIUM STAND MOUNT)!?

I think you probably better off taking the sidestand off completely mate and just ride with a long enough piece of pallet wood offcut which you can wedge under the motor when you stop somewhere, cheap and light :D

Reckon I can make my bike perform much better by just losing two stone myself :blast :beerjug:

Just to update everyone.
I have spoken to brother in law (simon) he is looking at a stainless that is stong but light, not as light as titanium but not a massive lump.
and as my pocket is going to be about 90 quid lighter he said it will off set the difference.
I will post some pics and weight, price comparisons as soon as we have a proto type made.
could be a couple of weeks though so bear with me.
I need one asap as I cant ride my bike with no stand at moment, bit embarasing leening it against the wall at the petrol station on way home.:blast
