Folks need your advice.

Bike was standing for some time while we travelled Africa on 650's :) had to get that in, on returning home 1200 wouldn't turn over, would try but struggled with a weird slipping noise, new battery the same, removed poly v belt and engine started fine. replaced alternator for a 2nd hand one from motorworks and engine starts with belt attached which is good however there's no 14V on the battery, only 12.

My question is this: is there anything else it could be other than the alternator? there's only a small plug on the alternator and connection seems fine. it's a 2006 bike

any help appreciated!

OK thanks I guess that's under the plastic cover on the back of the alternator then, do you know if that's a changeable unit?

1200 alternators are known for the front bearing seizing due to dirt, and corrosion of the stator laminations taking up the rotor clearance.

Why not seek out an auto electricians and get the old one stripped and refurbed for an on the shelf spare ?? They cost the earth new.

Thanks Pukmeister good idea although I think the effort of trying to turn the seized part has cracked the casing where the long bolts attached each side of the alternator together. don't know if that would compound any further issues.

Cracked cases, very common...... That's what i find on most of the 1200 alternators that i get in which are seized = scrap. I get replacements from the USA, about a third of the price of UK items.
