'02 GSA, just changed the oil and filter and believe I put a tad too much oil in. Started and let it idle for say 2 minutes and turned off.

I noticed that instead of a nice amber color in the sight glass it was more of a foggy light brown color with a fine layer of minute bubbles on the top.

Everything was fine prior to this and no water has been introduced to the engine.

After doing some reading it appears that as a result of the overfill when the engine started it emulsified the oil. I removed the drain plug in the air box and some black oil did drain out.

I let it drain, replaced the plug. I then removed the oil drain plug and let the 'tad' out.

Am I right in thinking this is what caused this problem and if so, will the oil now settle overnight back to a more normal state or ......?

Thanks..

UPDATE

...just to qualify the 'tad' too much. It might have been 2 cups at best.

So, after draining some of the oil the level was now below half on the center stand and cold.

I waited two hours and had another look at the sight glass with the intention of dumping the oil (leaving the newly installed filter in place) and let it drain overnight before refilling.

When I looked at the sight glass the oil level was just below half and was now back to it's nice clear amber color that it usually is after the oil change.

Hrmmm....so do I dump this nice clear amber oil which is at an acceptable level in the sight glass or not?

no.
if oils ok and around 1/2 way up glass, jobs a good un :thumb

FROTHY OIL

Looks like you need to get out and go on a long ride to clear the condensation out of your engine
canny excuse to get out on bike and if it works '''''''

Utter rubbish.

2 cups

Just ride the bike instead of letting the engine run for for 2 mintues and then pondering about feck all.

Ron, a tip I picked up from here (Steptoe?), is not to bother using the oil window when re-filling the oil sump.

Invest in a measuring jug, and put 3.7l into where the oil goes.
Watch with dismay as your oil apparently over fills itself.
After you come back from a ride, the oil will be 3/4 the way up the window.

Yarp! What he ^^^ says.

If in doubt, drop the oil into a clean container and measure it. Refill the bike with the correct amount then go for a thrash.

The thrash is not necessary but a nice way to end the job.
