Sightglass

Why did BMW also change the oil filler to the right cylinder head but leave the sight glass on the left hand side on the twin cam, you can't even top it up on your own without running round the bike to check how much has gone in, takes fookin ages.:D

It's not just the GS either Bendy

I fail to understand why bike makers prefer these abominations to dip sticks.
In a car the flexible dipstick drops in close to the centre of the sump where the oil level won't change regardless of slope.
Why don't bike makers do the same? Simple to manufacture = cheap = happy bean counters.
Simple to use - no faffing about with level ground, or centre stand or grovelling on the floor to see the level.
Reliable. No seals to fail below the oil line.
I agree absolutely.

I like sight glasses, hardly rocket surgery to use are they.

Although my old Aprilia had the simplest system yet, it had a transparent tube on the outside of the engine with a Maximum and Minimum line on it, you could see the oil level with great ease.

Hey at least you could see through yours lol. I've no idea if mine is very full or very empty haha.

The 1970's Kwavker 400 twin quickly blacked it's oil sight glass. So without ripping it out for cleaning there was no way to see the oil level. Thankfully the filler cap was above the clutch so a piece of plastic coated coat hanger wire did a great job as dip stick. It also worked just as well on the side stand. :)

Harder to get a dipstick in a useful place on the Boxer than you might think.

Those botching about the sight glass, and then saying yours is 7 years old make me laugh!

Check it on the sidestand. If the oil covers the whole sight glass, ride. If not, add 250ML and ride.

It is not rocket science for dog's sake!

Jim

It begs the question how the BMW air heads coped before oil sump sight glasses became bike design fashion accessories.

It really can't be beyond the wit of a top class German engineer to work out where to put a curved dip stick tube. He could even pop over to see the car guys and see how they manage to achieve the feat.

Checking the sight glass is easy to do but its a pain in the arse if the bike isn't level and the ground is dirty. Its also much too easy to over fill and have no idea how much too full it is. I should be glad the gearbox doesn't have one.

What a bunch of world class whingers .... God forbid you ever had a serious issue :blast

If you don't like or can't get on with the oil level sight glass then sell the fucking bike and go buy a Honda :comfort

Yes its a moan/whinge, but the silly sight glass will cost way more to design and make than a simple steel tube and springy stick. We pay more to get less, but at least its not a Honda.
