silly asking prices

I'm looking for a 1200GS and I prefer to buy from a private individual. But time after time I see them asking the same as dealer prices when they arent offering the dealer service. And whats even more frustrating is that their bikes arent selling as my records of the last 2 months of adverts shows.

Times are hard. Second hand prices of cars have dropped. Same for houses. Why havent the asking price of second hand 1200GS dropped equally. Why do sellers stick to silly high prices and fail to sell their bikes?

It's a buyers market!

I was more than happy with the hammer price of my used twin-cam & with the part exchange they gave for my old 1200.

You answered your own question fella - Go to a dealer!

I guess I'm just going to have to summon up the brass neck to offer several people 20% less than they are asking. See which one weakens first. Either that or buy a Triumph 800

Everything has a price.
You could polish a turd and sell it if the price was right. If the price is not right you don't sell it. Simple isn't it.

That is why they are up for sale still. Theere are reasons we are called Tossers you know!

My mate runs a business that buys cars - Any age or condition, he spends a fortune on Ads, but if you saw some of the cars he buys you just wouldn't believe it. People are desparte and stupid.Sometimes at the same time!

I am reading this and laughing.... not because I could pay less but the fact is prices for GS's are very high here. I commentented on another thread that I paid £7.5k for a very good 2005 here (and that is cheap from BMW)! As an example go onto BMW Motorrad France and look in occasion (pre-owned) if you can find a GS with reasonable mileage for than less than 10000 euro (any year) then I say well done. I was looking at a 2008 ~ 15kmiles for .... £10,000. But you will see some 2006 and 2005 going for anywhere up to £8.5k or more!! I say your doing alright at home!

do it - as summer approaches the lure of new metal will be stronger for them too

i bought 2nd hand from a dealer, they gave me the last owners number so I could find out what he had been up to, also had the comfort of a years warranty

and judging by the text i got today they are keen to take in part ex's now (which may mean they havent shifted as many new as they wanted to at least round here)

I think there are three types of sellers:

1) Ones who price according to Dealers' prices and stick to their guns (and are left with the bike)

2) Ones who price it at a level that allows for a bit of negotiation and still end up with a sum they (and you) are happy with

3) Ones who price it to sell and don't need to lower that price.


Only by getting into negotiations will you find out if they are (1) or (2).

If you don't bother doing that- you can be left with the impression that everyone wants too much.

Nail head - bud I live in France thus my pramble. GS prices are absolutely mental here.. from BMW approved dealers. And to be honest with you I would not buy a GS from a private sale... for reasons for which I am now aware of

Why are you bothered about the price others want for their bikes?

You perceive it as high, they obviously don't

You go on about the dealer offering 'service' which you imply people will pay more for then make an argument out for the advantage of buying private.

I have owned my GSA from new and it's pristine and very well looked after far better than lots of the similar stuff in dealers, so I would want good money if I sold it.

If you perceived it was too much then don't buy it

The fact prices are strong and depreciation low is good in my book

I recently wanted to buy a car and knowing what I wanted spent some time looking through EBay and Autotrader but ended up buying from a main dealer with the knowledge that I had a warranty if things went wrong and the price was better than private sales. I couldnt figure it either.

Same for quite a few secondhand cars. I've been keeping my eye out for a nice estate, 5-6yrs old, and many of the private punters are asking close to or more than dealer money......

Some bikes from individuals can be in far better nick than those in showrooms especially some on this site. You don't say what you're looking for, age of bike, miles, gadgets, budget etc just a general I want a 1200 and they're too expensive privately. No-one is hardly going to give them away as they want as much as they can get. There's probably more extras on private bikes as some dealers have been known to strip them clean back to standard. Try a bit of haggling as it is a buyers market at the mo to a certain extent.

I'm sure we all could help you find one if you are a bit more specific with your requirements. There are some bargains out there if you look.....

You think? I know many people who rag their bikes to death, but to look at them you would never guess it.
As already said, you can do a deal with a dealer & get a warranty. Its a no brainer in my view.

Perhaps you could give an indication as to what a 'silly price' is and what you consider to be an acceptable price to pay?

Keep looking theres always a bargain to be had, i sold my 09 gsa on here last year 18000 on it £8250 stick with it you will find something

The thing is, I doubt many of us sellers pluck an asking price out of thin air. I'm sure most ask around/check other ads for ideas. I know I did ...

The problem is finding out exactly how much these bikes are really selling for in the private market. Practically everyone I spoke to said I could get way more than I was asking, but they seemed to be basing their advice on hearsay or on bikes currently advertised for sale, not actual sale prices realised (French ads excepted). Strangely, when I did approach those who had recently sold a bike, they didn't seem keen to let on how much they had got. So, rightly or wrongly, I took the view that they must have got somewhat less than they had asked, and priced mine accordingly ...

Don't understand the attitude. Your bike has sold. We are not in competition. Why the secrecy?
