Hi gents. Changed gear box and final drive oil on my 1150Gs over the weekend and notices a few silver (aluminium?) flakes in final drive the oil. Is this indicative of the bearing on the way out? Or worse???? Bike has done about 28K.

The silver flakes may indicate that a bearing (probably the 'big' wheel side one) has started to spall and is on its way out. Well worth buying a seal and checking it:

A more tell tale sign is the colour of the oil . What colour was yours ?

Same colour as i put it in mate. its done about 5k miles.

Well I guess that's a good sign (my G/B and F/D oils come out with a slight grey tinge :nenau )

Regarding your silver flakes - from everything I've read, it's not normal and points to some sort of bearing issue. I'd pop the seal and take a look at the rivets in the bearing cage - only £20 or so for a seal. But your call of course.

The only other reference to 'silver flakes' I can find on here, is in this thread:

I have read about it on ADV too but you'd have to dig your way through some of the million page long final drive threads

Am going to order a seal today and check the state of the bearing. I agree with you MattW that I its not normal Am off to Brittany at the end of the month so want to be sure of the bearings condition. Will post up what I find.

Don't fret, it is normal, small flakes on the plug are not unusual, it's when it's packed with flakes as large as the plug itself that you need be concerned.

If the oil was clear then nothing is getting ground up in the final drive.
New oil in and away on your holiday.
