Singles & Twins - A Vstrom for now

After testing F650 singles, F650 twins, F800gs, a deauville, transalp, Vstrom, Versys, Bergman, Tenere, my favourite was clear - the 800gs, but I cant strech my plastic to £6-7k, nor even £5+k for an F650 twin.

Sadly, as this the best one-make forum I've found on the web, I've had to opt for a V-strom - my £3k budget got me a mint 2yr old with luggage. Collected today, 200 miles home via A roads, it does all I need, in a dull sort of way.

So goodbye, UKgsers, for the mo - hopefully I'll be back in 1-2 years time, by when I can afford an older, depreciated, 800cc GS!

The V Strom is a good bike , nice choice .
I was out with a new strom rider on Tuesday evening, and I don't have a GS either .

Good choice!

650 VStrom's an excellent bike. Tried one recently and was very impressed. Smooth, fast if revved, good handling, nice riding position and excellent fuel economy by all accounts. I found the seat a bit uncomfy but that's probably just me.

I was toying with buying a good second hand one also. If I had, I'd still be posting on here.

Ace Machine

Last year,after being twatted off the 1200GS,my insurance company kindly
arranged a loan bike,1000 V Strom.Took it on a 3 week blast round Europe,
2 up,luggage,camping gear.Wrung its neck,and it still kept asking for more!
Very impressive.The ride was very similar to my PD gs.
If limited funds were a factor,Id definitely go for one.

I agree....

GS or no GS, I have a Vara this is still a great site. However a question for all GS owners. Or rather some GS owners. Why is it that when I show out to some GS riders they totally ignore me. They cannot be representative of this site because everyone on here are friendly.
Hopefully one day I will be a proper GS rider but until then please show out to the little old man on the Vara when you see him.

And now for some sad news: 22 hours after collecting the weestrom, I parked it at our local (IOW) suzie dealer, to get some clothing worthy of the bike, tank guard and engine bars, when a daft dozy dipstick of a delivery driver reversed his lorry straight into it

Damage doesnt "look" severe but parts & labour may make it uneconomic to repair - front mudguard, headlight, tank fairings both sides, front lhs indicator, clutch lever, clutch lever handguard, gear lever, rear peg, side stand, full stand, pannier bracket, top box......can you believe it? So I'm off the road again, and will have to argue with the drivers insurers! Anyone got a spare gs twin to loan/rent? Does anyone believe in divine intervention?

Bad luck with the accident. Stick around on here though, you never know what might turn up in the bikes for sale section....I think I saw an old but good nick airhead for around 1,800 quid, which is as good a way as any into GS ownership. If not that you'll find something to suit your wallet at some point.

I actually have both - a Vstrom 1000 and a '09 GSA.
Depends on what I am doing determines which bike I take.

The Vstrom should not be underestimated as it is a very capable bike - very quick but in my opinion not as refined as the GSA.

The fuel mapping on the Vstrom is crude and so you may need a power commander to iron out the issues at about 3500 rpm.

Apart from that is a very good bike and at £3K well worth it.

buy it back off the insurance company after they have payed you out, replace essentials, and use as comuter its bound to get twatted again in town or sell it use extra dough towards your new gs.
