Six pot calipers!!

Project six pot cancelled

I have decided after reading previous posts by Mzokk and fergus,to heed their advice and shelve the six pot idea cos they have had expierience of these calipers.I have none,I don't want to spend a lot of my time and effort fitting these, and they are no good.Just one thing regarding the master cylinder and the amount of fluid needed,Motorworks do the PFM kit six pot calipers/discs/pads/braided lines, don't mention an upgrade on the master cylinder  so it must be ok to work 12 pistons, like someone said the area of the 8 oe pistons must equal the area of the smaller 12 pistons.I am still going to do something with the brakes, most probably find something a little easier to fit,R1/R6!!! calipers.Cheers for the info guys you have saved me a of grief :thumb.Andy

just to say, i didn't mean that the various callipers will have the same area, they might, i don't know. the 6 pots will have smaller pistons than a 4 though, you'll have to check the sizes.

pressure excerted on the disc and lever travel are a function of the master cylinder piston to calliper piston area.

more piston area at the calliper will need a bigger master cylinder to move more fluid in behind them.

bigger master cylinder = more pressure/less feel & visa versa.

AAMOI you can swap the twin piston F9 brembo calliper on an airhead for a later 4-pot unit & it works better & feels better. some people have swapped the original calliper for a harrisson 6-pot too with apparent success.

it's a case of do the sums, "suck it & see", or ask someone who's already done it.

If you want them off the shelf, any chance one of those fits the ol' R80G/S front disk?

I've been thinking about fitting something else, maybe this is an opportunity :)

project 6 pot reborn

Well I could not resist the temtation to do something with this,I have just spent 10 hours making a wooden template for the machinist to work with.I have done my best to keep the original mounting holes as near to the ones on the calipers,to give as much strenght,as to reduce any chance of flex and to save me buying new lines.Every mounting point will have 12mm of alloy to either bolt too or though,so I make that 24mm thick :confused:In the picture you see it has been made to infil between the top and bottom original mounting point and is just as thick on the other side.Spoke to Motorworks reguarding the extra pots and they basically said it will be fine cos six smaller pots equals 4 bigger pots,so no bigger master cylinder will be needed :D they don't work very well at the mo,they feel a bit wooden:D :D Andy
