Is there anyway of transferring recordings on the Sky+ hard disc to a Lappy/PC? My Sky+ HD box has a USB port but not sure if it can be used? My missus has recorded some stuff and wants it kept, I know I can play it and then record it to my DVD but thought it better if I could download it to my Lappy?

bad news...

I am fairly certain it cannot be done, I read that the hard disk recording saves the raw digital transmission before the data is decoded, as this means that if you stop paying for your subscription, the data cannot be decoded. Thus making the hard disk useless.

This means your only real option is to record at the analogue stage (after decoding) via scart/composite video. To the best of my knowledge, you cannot record output from a HDMI. This seems to be a deliberate limitation to keep the digital rights for copyright purposes.

I had my + HD box installed today and I asked the engineer the same question. The answer was nope mate. :comfort

As above, with a tv card is the only sane way to try, and then there isn't much point as you'll lose the HD resolution.

If you have a HD satellite card in your pc, cams, cards and a lot of skill and patience, it 'might' be possible. There are a couple of threads (over 2200 posts) on AV forums of people trying to play/record encrypted sky and hd on their media pc's with varying success.

If you fitted a cheap dvb-s card you can receive and record all of the free to air channels (including red button broadcasts) using free software like MediaPortal.

You should have got the Humax HD FreeSat box.

On that you can use a remote HDD via USB to archive recorded programmes - even HD ones!

I've not rescanned the channels for ages. Is there more than BBCHD and ITVHD available on freesat now?

I beleive there is away of taking Sky programmes off the plus box, but you need to remove the drive and put it into a PC to do it, have a read through the following

here

an here

Also

I haven't tried any of the above but it may help.

unless the programs are free to air i don't think you can rip them from the hard drive the other channels are still encrypted and can't be watched

I had Sky+. When I cancelled my subscription I lost all the recorded programmes on the drive as my card wouldn't allow them to be un-encrypted. Sky did warn me that this would happen :)

yes you can

I have been doing this for about 8years..............Arcohs .................only problem is you can only record in real time. read

i use similar to archos - a 120 quid 1tb media player/recorder from fleabay, records in real time as an ".avi" but only in mono?!

Nice one:thumb2 mine is an 80 gig and cost 680:eek: 7 yes ago but it is in stereo and like yours avi just USB to pc and click and drag

real time recording with any sort of HD recorder that has an aux input should be relatively easy as the the programs are decrypted for output on the scarts

you would think but when I tried to put the last season of LOST on to my HD recorder, doing the "live" record thing, the recorder would stop after a few seconds with a message along the lines of encrypted channel unable to record, but you could watch it on TV okay,

set up was

Sky box -> HD recorder -> TV
