I got new front stanchions for my '82 R100RS a couple of years ago and have a slight weep of fork oil from the top of the fork on one side. It was so little that I didn't bother doing anything about it and assumed it was from the filler plug (a socket head screw/bolt) under the plastic end cover at the top of the stanchion. It wasn't, it was quite dry under the cap.

So, should there have been some sort of seal like a washer or an O-ring at the top where the stanchion fits into the top yoke?

Does anybody have picture or diagram? It would be nice to know what bits I'll need before stripping it.

And what oil should I use? No, no, no, what FORK oil should I use, I remember using some thicker stuff once and the front end felt a lot firmer and, er, you know, better.
