After 1000 miles under my ownership Ive noticed some oil marks on the gear lever, a closer inspection showed a film on the engine by the starter.

The bikes now done 3000 miles and was last serviced at 1750 miles, I last checked the oil about 600 miles ago and on the site glass it was about halfway between the current level and the top.

I don't know where the level in the site glass was when it was serviced but I assume that after 1250 miles a 1000 of which I know have been quite spirited it would have used some oil.

I cannot see oil around the switch towards the front of the engine it looks as though it's in on the rear and goes up behind the intake.

Thinking about it I have had the odd burning oil smell since I've had the bike.

What's the verdict?

Cheers

Possible rear crank or balancer shaft seal. Known problem with some dohc bikes.

i had the same, timing chain tensioner loose on top of left pot.
removed lh throttle body to get a proper purchase on the 15mm nut.

i have the bmw special tool-pliers for the clips, means you can use them again.there here if you want to borrow them.

Cheers... It looks like I may have been suffering from #newownerworrysyndrome a fact the it would appear David spotted before I did.

I cleaned the oil and grime of and took it for an 80 mile blat and it all seems fine and to top the oil to a position I think it was in c700 miles ago only took a small amount (maybe 100ml)

I did wonder if there is some kind of breather that could have belched out a misting of oil in that region
