Hey Guys,

This is driving me mad, recently the bike (2011 R1200GS) sort of suffers to start / turn over at random, there's no pattern to when it does this.

Replaced the battery, BMW checked the spark plugs, checked the battery is getting charged myself with a meter around 14v+ when idling and battery around 13v when off, so is getting charged. Have a big euro trip coming up and worried that one morning it just won't turn over.

BMW says it's nothing and so did another mechanic but something has definitely changed as it never used to start like this, have a listen to the vid, hope someone knows what the hell is going on.

Relax, mines the same. Sometimes it has a sort of 'tight spot' where the engaged starter hasn't built enough momentum to crank it quickly leading to hesitation.

Mine is worse to start when hot. After a ride you can burn your hand on the heat soakage in the starter motor from the engine casings.

My 2 triumph tigers have been like that crank slow when hot as long as it does start, you could try checking earth connection & solenoid +- had that on a few bikes.

Just want to make sure there's no underlying issue, last thing I want is it not starting one morning in the middle of italy! Seems to be something recent, that's wasn't sure...

Mine is the same, just got back from month long trip, never let me down once ;-)

Remember the old days of easing a bike over tdc on the kick starter. Well this is the same thing. Your bike engine is stopping in a place in the cycle where its harder work for the starter to get going. Dont worry. Mine does the same

Thanks chaps, will monitor the situation and see how it goes :)
