I’m currently away on a trip, done a thousand miles plus so far.

Last couple of days first thing after a day of around 250-300 miles the first press of starter I get a click, then second a click. Third time it cranks, and starts.

Any fixes that I can do to do the remainder of the week. I don’t have much tools, I’m thinking it’s going to need a strip down and clean.

Any pointers or temporary fixes?

Halfords, 2 x battery power leads

Run direct from battery to starter.

Will help short term

I just bought a new starter

Check that the battery terminals are clean and tight.
Check that the charging voltage is around 14.3 volts.
If these look good have a garage load test the battery.

My 2010 twin cam was like that, and a new battery really didn't help. I'd also heard about doubling up on the cables, has to be worth a shot before buying a whole new starter.

I did find cracking open the throttle helped it crank over better.

Thanks guys, new battery on about 2 months ago. It wasn’t a motobatt as wasn’t available but a good excide alternative from tayna. Voltage checked and alternator all good, charging fine. Cables all seem fine.

It’s like it’s sticking the first couple of presses then it seems fine after. This morning once started I was heading for ferry Holyhead, so four stop starts all fine after the initial startup witching 20 mins.

Had my starter replaced after about 75,000 miles. It was refusing to start when the engine was hot, once it cooled down a bit it started. The new starter sorted it.

I had similar but always started after repeated presses of the starter button until I then found a corroded wire into the relay. Re wired all four cables while I was on there and now fixed. In the meantime you can short the trigger wire to the power cable terminal with a screwdriver!

For info

The earlier Valeo (long case) unit has been replaced by the short case Bosch unit ( to fit in between the exhaust servo box and crank case )

The good news is the earlier Valeo (long case) unit will fit in the same space ( I know I tried :D )

The solenoid failed on my first unit, and i dont know with the second unit (Bosch fitted to the TC) it got lazy, i

I just replaced it, & the battery at the same time
