Thought my battery was dying the other week....it seemed to just have enough life in it to engage the starter, but would then just rattle (the starter)like mad... even an old biddy walking past pulled a face at the noise... anyway...after an unsuccessfull attemp to bump it, it fired on the button...checked battery at home...fine...wierd huh..
Although it has worked ok ever since, I havent been happy and after finding the "how to strip the starter" post by Mikep, decided to take the starter off today to see if it was ok inside.
Mystery solved... the plate which seperates the gears from the armature had come loose and rubbed against it, and although discoloured and marked, not burnt through... I carefully bent the tabs around the edge back into shape and it has re-seated and looks secure, cleaned all the grease and crap off the magnets....job done.
Thanks to mikep for the post...or I would have more than likely just left the fault to develope.....and ended up with a nackered starter.

It is not a bad little job is it, and it certainly made my starter work better, well worth doing :thumb2
