Just got a secondhand small top box for my 1200rt. It came with two keys, but I would like to key it alike to my current bike keys.
Im fine sorting out the wafers once the locks out, but how do you remove the lock in the first place?

Any help would be great, thanks :thumby:

I did mine a few years' ago.
Seem to remember removing a flat plastic inspection cover (large-bladed driver or a coin), insering the key into the barrel, then connecting a tiny LED to some wires (and battery) and dropping that in to illuminate the inside, then using a stiff bit of wire taped to a long and thin driver to press a release button (that was well hidden).
Very patience testing!

Didn't Ebbo do a guide somewhere?

What stanley said, plus the little hole to slot the wire into is located on the right side of the barrel.
If you imagine a 'V' shape slot on the right side of the barrel housing,(not on the lock barrel itself but the plastic housing that it slots into) , with the point of the V nearest the outer edge of the box , the little wire slots into a tiny tiny hole, approx 1mm at the pointy end of the 'V' and only needs very slight pressure to push the wafer inwards at which point the key and lock fly out onto the garage floor and scatter the wafers and tiny springs everywhere. Don't ask me how I know:D Unless you have three hands- one for the wire, one for the torch and one to catch the lock and key, the weight of the key seems to do a good job of pulling the barrel out once you release it.
The key needs to be inserted into the lock in the locked position.

I think the dealer can do it for you, or it's possible to dismantle the box completely to gain easy access to the barrel from the inside. Pity you don't live a bit nearer, could have done it for you.

I think Ebbo's guide disappeared for some reason- I looked for it a while ago, before learning the hard way, and couldn't find it.

Many thanks Stanley and Steve, thats a great help. I saw the little inspection cover, took it off with a coin and it looked ery dark in there! I will rig up some illumination!
Yes, Ebbo's guide has gone unfortunately.

I did my topbox recently and yes it needs patience but fairly easy to do.
A length of thin welding rod or similar with a 20mm end bent at right angles.

The point made about having the lock in the locked position is spot on or you will never removed vie the lock.
Hold the key in the lock lightly and you will feel it move when the wire is touching the lock.

First time I tried mine I failed after 20 mins, walked away had a cuppa and 2nd attempt took 4mins.
Crap design but be patient it's better than stripping out the inside of the box.
If you know a gynaecologist let him try,

Fook its fiddley. Just come in for a break, still no joy. Is the thickness of the rod critical at 1mm? So about the thickness of a paperclip then? Thanks wreck diver for the tip on 20mm right angle bend. I can get the wire to pass thru the slot ok, its just hitting the spot I guess.
Key is in, locked position, i.e. you can press to open but no resistance and the lever doesnt spring out. One more go for the day......

I was trying to get the lock out for almost 2-hours last night , but a fresh start this morning.
By adjusting my home made tool I was able to release it with just 5 mins of fiddling :)

Thanks again to all the answers given here, they helped loads. On the small 28ltr BMW top case after you removed the coin operated cap you will see a cut out slot. The link on this thread has a picture of it in the guide given on post 16. Its mentioned that this is a later addition to the internals.

This means you have to make a few adjustments to the home made removal tool, or at least this is what worked for me. Hopefully the pics will help the next poor soul who has to swap a lock :thumb2

Well done,it feels great when you feel the lock pop out.
I would love to meet the guy that designed that.

Glad you succeeded. A bit late now but I think it was a paperclip that Ebbo used in his guide..

I should have mentioned, that's what I used on the Mark 10 version I made that finally did the job :) . Just a normal paperclip. Once again thanks all.

The Highs and Lows

Just got my 2014 RT last weekend and thought I would put the small top box on it from my 2010 bike that I still have.
Just change the sliders in the lock as per the you tube video and all has gone great.
However just on the way out of work fell down two steps and threw the box across the car park. It now has loads of scratches as if it was in a RTA
Anyway if I manage to buy another small box I will certainly know how to change a lock
