The rear shock on my 07 R1200GS has started to creak since I got back from France on Sunday. I noticed a chemical smell on Sunday, like nail varnish remover says my wife. The Adjuster knurl nut thingy also creaks when I turn it.

Any ideas as to what might be causing it? It is booked into Battersea on Thursday. May just have to wait and see.

Just out of interest, if I have to replace the shock should I go for OEM or after market? If so which one.

From personal experience, I rate "WILBERS" aftermarket shock absorbers highly.

Try going out without your wife and see if it still smells:augie
I noticed a weird glue like chemical smell a couple of weeks ago in Italy, it was a baking hot day, about +36c but haven`t noticed any squeeks yet.
I will check the rear shock once I get back over next week, the poor things been sitting there on its own now for nearly a week, probably had a manicure by now though:roll

The diagnosis from BMW Battersea is that the Pivot bearing in the drive shaft is shot. The smell was burning neoprene. The bike is not safe to drive.

In addition, there is an unspecified problem with the rear shock. Battersea do not have the parts and are looking into how long it will be before they can get them. In the meantime they have no courtesy bike for me so I am without. :spitfire

The only glimmers of hope are that they are going to do the EWS whilst the bike is in and SWMBO has offered to lend me her F650 to get to work so I am not reduced to using the tube.

This is hardly the end of the world, but for a new bike it does not inspire confidence.

So watch out for the smell of hot neoprene. It is likely to be bad news.
