Started the bike this morning and walked away to get my helmet when turned round there was smoke coming off the top of the exhaust near the clamp.
OH what’s that, must have an oil leak….No….dripping coming from below the tank.
Sh1t that can’t be oil….PETROL….. turned the bike off…. No flames.
Checked and followed the trail of fuel to the lower of the two fat pipes coming from the tank.
Have lifted the tank up a bit to have a look and can’t see much.
Started the bike again no leaks.
On closer inspection having lifted the tank further up, the pipes look odd, was thinking since they are 26 years old I should change them, don’t want a petrol leg warmer any time soon.

Any tips or hints to changing them before I start please…?

I’ve just changed mine. They were dated BMW 1999 and cracked internally certainly at the tank end. They are 8mm internal diameter (ID) but I bought 7.6mm ID high pressure fuel injection hose suitable for higher ethanol fuel.

My 1 meter of hose (plenty to do both pipes) came with 2 stainless hose clamps but I bought a couple more to replace the original single use clamps in place under the tank. I think there may be some more fuel hose specific clamps but I used those supplied (jubilee type).

When I released my top hose I was surprised that the tank wanted to drain what seemed like its entire contents - I swiftly plugged that pipe with my seat retaining bolt while I got the other line off which only contained the fuel in its length.

Simple job to the lay the tank on a soft/non scratch surface to replace the fuel pipes.

I took the opportunity to fit quick release connectors at the same time.

If you can - run the tank low of fuel as lifting it off will be easier than having it full.

Apologies if that’s all obvious!

I found this helpful:

I bought two of the same quick disconnects via Louis Motorrad (£59.01 delivered). They arrived swiftly and don’t seem bulky.

Thank you, Ser3J.
I like to get as much info before before I start, especially something on the bike as I get annoyed if it is not going.
I will get some pipe on Monday and change the
connectors while I am at it.
Thanks again for your help
