I bought '01 1150 last year with Remus pipe already fitted. The bike runs fine, my mileage is 50+ but after a ride when I start the bike again it generates a lot of white smoke from the exhaust. It also smells pretty bad. The smoke is only at the start after a ride and not after leaving the bike for a few days. It started after a week of riding in extremely hot conditions in Romania last year.

I don't have lambda sensor in. Could this be a problem?

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Go for a ride until it gets warmed up properly

Come back in your drive or whatever and leave on the sidestand for half an hour then put on the centre stand on level (ish) ground

Check the sightglass for oil Is it it full?

Okay so drain off the oil and measure and only put back 3.5 litre that should bring it to the upper half of the sighthglass

See what happens then

And How much extra was in there?

Thanks guys.

I have the same problem with side and centre stand.
Also, the smoke was there even when the oil was slightly below normal level when I had problems with leaking alu oil cap during my trip last year.

By the way, when I visited BMW service in Germany to get the standard plastic cap they said the Touratech alu cap was the worst thing the company ever produced. Apparently it's too heavy for the vibrations and destroys the o'ring...for 20 times the price of plastic one.

I believe that white smoke is water/steam, so it could be condensation in your exhaust system.

Burning oil is blue/black.

I am sure I'll soon be corrected if others don't agree.

over here in balmier climes, possibly with more humidity my GS pisses out 1/4 of a cup of water on start up with the standard exhaust/cat fitted.

Burning oil is usually a whitish blue, rich mixture is grey / black smoke. As others have said, it could also be condensation / steam - that'll feel 'wet' if you put your hand at the end of the tailpipe. There's a definite difference in smell between burning fuel / startup condensation and burning oil.

Every so often my 1100 will smoke like a bu**er if I have parked it on its side stand for a while. Oil gets past the rings on the downhill cylinder (depending on where the piston has stopped in the cylinder).

As yours started smoking quite suddenly with no other changes having been made to the bike (I assume?), it points to a potential fault of some sort having developed. It could be worth doing a compression check and checking (or having a workshop check) your valve guide oil seals. Have a friend follow you - does it puff smoke between gear changes or when you throttle off from high revs?

As it looks like you're in London (?), The GSshop (Steptoe on here) is on your doorstep - he'll be able to help diagnose the problem (if one exists) and sort it out
